When picturing a salad, most people would probably envision a plate of lettuce, a few other veggies and maybe a protein. However, “salad” is really just a vague term for any mix of cold or warm veggies “sometimes accompanied by fish, meat, or other ingredients,” (that’s what Google comes up with when you search “define salad.”) So basically, a salad goes way beyond a sad plate of raw vegetables–and I think I’ve narrowed down the five components to make a really bangin’ bowl of deliciousness.

  1. Base

The base to a good salad is absolutely key to its potential deliciousness. While lettuce is the classic go to, grains such as farro or quinoa are also great options. My personal favorite thing to do is mix a lettuce blend with whatever grain I have on hand. The mix of the warm with the cold adds a bit more depth to the meal, and the extra carbs ensure I’ll stay satisfied for longer. 1. Raw Ingredients

This seems pretty obvious, but adding some raw ingredients to a salad that already has cooked items adds a nice crisp components to the whole shebang. With fall in the air, great seasonal veggies like beets, bell peppers and cabbage are great options. Or try adding a sweet dimension by incorporating apples or pears. Country Living has a bunch of recipes featuring both warm and cold ingredients, here.

  1. Cooked Ingredients

With the weather getting a little colder, adding some cooked ingredients to your salad will add a hearty, warm element to keep you full and satisfied. Roasted broccoli or carrots are classic options, or you could really jump into the season of squash and try adding some roasted pumpkin or butternut squash. Taste has a great pumpkin and spinach salad, here. Or, opt for adding a protein to the mix. Chicken breast is a great healthy option, or if you’re a vegan/vegetarian try some baked tofu or tempeh.

  1. Special, Fun Toppings

This is where the fun really starts – cue the music. Salad toppings really have no limits, so here is where you can pick your favorite little snacks ad crumble them on top of your plate of deliciousness. Crumbled up cheese, roasted nuts, avocado, croutons – the list doesn’t end. Get creative and try a few of these creative options: roasted turmeric cashews, homemade croutons or make your own basil.

  1. Dressing

While the dressing options of olive oil and balsamic vinegar are delicious and classic for a reason, they are just the beginning of the expansive world of salad dressings. Using hummus, roasted red pepper dressing or a tahini dressing are all unique and creative ways to amp up your salad.
