7 Things Music Can Do For You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

1. Music can be a brilliant agent for concentration. There’s a large group of people chatting outside your room and you’re getting serious FOMO – why aren’t these rogues revising too? This is the time to stick on a movie soundtrack and get in the zone.

2. Music is a seriously effective way to improve your mood. When listening to music your brain releases dopamine, a ‘feel-good’ chemical which boosts happiness levels and MOTIVATES. If you’ve ever dropped in to a pre ‘just to show your face’ then spontaneously decided to Klute it, you may have the pre-playlist to blame.

3. Music can take you back to a different period of your life. Whether a holiday or a heartbreak, music can give you the space to reflect on past experiences, making sense of how you were feeling at a certain point in time.

4. Music is the bed-rock of a romantic atmosphere; with music, the mundane can become sublime. What might have been a 2-hour car journey, fraught with tension after your partner missed the last McDonalds stop, becomes a Bublé-infused rollercoaster ride in the Polo of passion.

5. Music can trigger a much-needed cry. When we’re at our lowest, emotional release through music allows us to share our pain with, to quote Elton John, someone ‘suffering enough to write it down’. We all love a good wallow from time to time.

6. Music can be incredibly calming. Just having the radio on low when you’re winding down for bed helps still the mind. Studies have even shown listening to music while trying to fall asleep may help sufferers of PTSD and insomnia.

7. Music can bring people together. Whether at a festival or mini work-out session on the landing – music can unify people like little else. It breaks social boundaries whilst allowing us to understand other cultures in a highly enjoyable manner.
