Five Ways to Deregulate this Fall

As much as the fall season brings warm cozy feelings of happiness and nostalgia, for the average college student, it also brings stress.

The fall semester is very exciting for college students, whether you are an incoming freshman starting your post-high school journey or a senior starting your last year of education before your professional career. Both of these things are also equally stressful.

Here are some ways you can deregulate this fall to alleviate some of those stressors the season brings.

1) Write it down

You have probably heard everyone tell you to start journaling when you’re stressed out. Their advice is right. Journaling doesn’t have to be fancy or organized in any way. All you need is a pen and a piece of paper, even just your notes app will do. Take this time to brain dump your thoughts and worries.

The act of letting all those crazy and stressful thoughts be released from your brain and onto paper takes a huge weight off your shoulders and immediately knocks down your stress a couple levels.

2) Watch a cozy show

Find a new show to start or rewatch a fall favorite to get yourself in the cozy vibe and destress your mind and body. Lay down with a fluffy blanket and your favorite fall drink and let your mind enter another reality for a bit. A favorite of mine, and one I will always recommend, is “The Vampire Diaries.” Allow your body a moment to rest and recoup.

3) Make a fall inspired treat

You don’t have to be a baker or cook to enjoy finding a recipe to try out. Find a hearty soup or indulgent cookie recipe to treat yourself to. Giving your mind something different and fun to focus on will alleviate your stress and you get to eat a yummy treat after!

4) Declutter and make room for calm energy

The simple act of making your bed and sorting through your belongings can be very therapeutic. Go through your closet and cleanse your fashion palette. You might discover pieces you forgot you had and come up with new ways to incorporate it into some fall outfits. Make your space truly yours again by donating clothes, decor or furniture that no longer serve you. A clean space allows for a clear and happy mind.

5) Light a candle and slow down

Breathe, turn off the big light, turn on some mood lighting like Christmas lights and light a candle. Sometimes our surroundings can increase our stress and making your environment cozier and more welcoming can make a huge difference.

Fall is a season that many look forward to, but it is also stressful for many. Taking small steps to make the season easier on your mind and body will make this fall the best one yet.
