This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

Having a meal after you wake up might be the most important decision of your day. There is significant evidence that eating a plate in the morning has benefits that last far beyond your morning routine. If you’d like to know why, keep reading.

It can reduce your risk of heart disease.

When you skip breakfast, most of the time you end up overeating the rest of the day. Overeating comes with weight gain, which can lead to high cholesterol and blood pressure issues down the road. It has been shown that people who eat breakfast have a lower chance of heart disease.

Proteins in the morning limit desire later.

Eating a breakfast that is high in protein, such as eggs or yogurt, is likely to keep you full for longer and help you avoid making poor nutritional choices later on.

You’ll lose weight by eating more.

If your largest meal of the day is breakfast, you’re more than likely to lose some pounds. If someone eats the same amount of calories in a day but distributes them differently, chances are the person that consumed more calories in the morning will lose more weight.

It reduces your risk of diabetes.

When you skip breakfast, you tend to overcompensate later in the day, leading to less nutritious meals. People who don’t eat in the morning have a higher risk of developing diabetes than those who eat a little something for breakfast.

Breakfast helps you stay concentrated.

The brain loves the energy it gets from meals, especially a morning bowl of oatmeal. Breakfast is just as important for focus and concentration as it is for physical exercise. When you eat a healthy breakfast, you have a better ability to memorize and absorb information than the people who didn’t have anything for breakfast.

The benefits of breakfast will definitely pay off in the long run. So, if you’re skipping your breakfast for any reason, you could hurt yourself in various ways. It doesn’t seem like a big deal now, but it can affect you in the future. Start making the healthy choice to eat in the morning now to help prevent bad things down the line!
