What Campus Life is Like

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clarion chapter.

As you start to prepare for college, you’re all excited to move into your dorm and meet new people. You’ll start talking to people who could be your new roommate. You’ll start to say your “see you laters” to everyone back home. Saying goodbye to your parents is harder than you imagined. Then it’s time to move in and be on your own for the very first time. So now what?

You control when you wake up, when to get your school work done, when it’s time to hang out with friends, or decide when to do whatever the heck you want. It’s your first taste of freedom.

You’ll try out the party scene and see what everyone talks about. Some of you may like it and start to party every weekend. Others won’t like the party scene. Whatever you prefer is okay. Take it from the girl that goes out to parties most weekends; even drinking on the week days. It’s perfectly okay to indulge in having fun. College is about new experiences and expressing yourself.

In college, you go out of your comfort zone. You explore your new town and find stuff you never thought you would do. You find new places to explore with new people. You’ll spend almost all of your money and will dread asking your parents to put more into your bank account.

The people you meet become your best friends. You guys will do everything together. It’s having your best friend sleepover 24/7. Before you know it, they become your family. You can’t imagine life without them.

Sometimes, instead of writing your paper that’s due in two days, you start the new show you’ve been dying to watch on Netflix. This happens more than you think it will. It’s okay to take a night off and put your stress onto the next day. Sometimes you need to take a breather (literally!).

Join as many clubs you want. Get involved on campus. You’ll meet so many new people this way. You’ll get to know your campus better. You will always have someone to ask questions to. The upperclassmen will help you with anything you need. If your friend is bugging you to join a club with them, go and check it out. It might be something you both will enjoy. It’s one more thing to you have in common.

Food, food, food; a college student’s real best friend. When you’re in college, you’ll live off of pizza and ramen noodles. You’ll eat pizza more times than you would like to admit. Ramen noodles will be your go-to meal when you run out of money.

The best exercise you’ll get is walking all over campus to get to your classes. A lot of college students decide to go to the gym, it is extra exercise. No one said you have to lift. Get a group of friends and shoot around with a basketball.

In college, you may discover things about you that you never knew. You might try new foods, conquer a fear that you had, or find new activities the interest you. It’s okay to change.
