7 Ways to Practice Thankfulness Every Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carthage chapter.

We often think about what we’re thankful for once a year: in November around Thanksgiving. However, we shouldn’t limit ourselves to thankfulness solely during this time, but all year long. Practicing thankfulness every day will lift your spirits and fill you with positivity. So, here are some ways you can show your appreciation every day of the year.

1. Keep a Gratitude Journal

Keep a journal and place it next to your bed. Every night before you go to sleep, make a list of things that you’re thankful for on that particular day and, at the end of the year (or whenever you need a little pick-me-up), refer back to the positive things that are happening in your life.

2. Send a gratitude message every week

Once a week, think about one person you’re thankful for. At any time during the week, call, text, email, or even meet with that person to tell them you’re thankful for them and why you’re lucky to have them in your life. This exercise will make both you and that person feel good.

3. Look on the bright side

When you encounter a negative situation, try to find the positivity in it! Be thankful for your challenges and failures by finding something good within it or the lesson that can be learned.

4. Volunteer

Give back to the community and to those who are in need. It will remind you to stay humble, be thankful, and appreciate what you have in life.

5. Practice mindfulness

When your mind is all over the place, bring yourself back to the present moment. Focus on your breathing and realize that you are breathing because you have a purpose. Be thankful that you’re alive.

6. Spend time with loved ones

The holidays don’t have to be the only time you spend with those you love. Spend time with your loved ones year-round to remind yourself how grateful you are to have those people in your life.

7. Thank yourself

Sometimes we spend so much time thanking everyone else, we forget to do the same for ourselves. Take time out of your day to thank yourself for something that you did. Don’t be afraid to get a little selfish! You deserve it.
