As the alarm blares in the background of you lying in bed, you refuse to believe it’s time to wake up. The warmth and softness of your bedsheets make you never want to leave the marshmellowy heaven. In this moment you remind yourself of all the times in summer where you had taken the endless days for granted, unless of course you had a job or other commitment. However, when your alarm goes off there is no denying that it’s officially the beginning of the semester and you have to get up. Many have a shock of early mornings, particularly for non-early morning people like me, it can sometimes be difficult to not want those lazy days to come back. You might think a three month holiday is long enough but sometimes it feels as if it isn’t and the “summer blues” can happen.

Coming back to college changes our routines not just with having to work and socialize with new people but living on campus or commuting can be tiring. Often, the people who we would normally spend all day with can no longer hang out because they’ve gone to different colleges, live somewhere else or are working. What’s even worse is that although we’ll see familiar faces we still haven’t seen these people since last semester and that may make you feel disconnected or a bit lost. For some it can feel overwhelming to return to campus and the routine of school life, however, for others they find it easy and familiar, it’s like they are sliding back into old routines and habits.

A lot can happen in a summer as I’m sure we’re aware of. It’s likely when meeting with old friends or friends at college you thought they may be slightly different. Not going through the same experiences and being at the same colleges or places means we all have different views. Perhaps you noticed their attitude or demeanor has changed or their slang. This is natural and is guaranteed to happen but it can be difficult when you feel the person isn’t the same person they used to be. That being said, it doesn’t mean they are a completely different person, the same person is still there and so is the friendship you had before.

Luckily when dealing with a case of the summer blues the weather isn’t something Cal Lutheran students need to be sad about as it stays warm with blue skies until at least October!

Be Positive!

The best way to beat the summer blues is to be positive about what lies ahead of you! I made a list of the things to look forward to in the next few weeks as fall starts to draw in:

  1. Being with friends old and new
  2. New classes = new opportunities = learning new things
  3. Shorter days and cooler nights means blankets and scary movies for Halloween
  4. Pumpkins, pie and PSL
  5. The opportunity to start again with a fresh slate in a new semester and new year
