In the past 4 and a half years since I’ve moved to LA from England, I have lived in three houses, moved to a new high school and college, and I have lived in three different dorms on campus. I have moved A LOT. Moving comes hand in hand with a lot of change. This week I will be embracing more change by moving house again for the fourth time in four and a half years! A routine of packing and unpacking that I have become all too familiar with, in fact, I will let you in a little secret, I have a couple of boxes burried away that I’m not sure what contains in them from previous moves…

You would think by now that I would be used to change and moving around in my life, after all, I moved country, heck I moved to a different continent! I am used to it now to a certain degree as there has been little consistency in the last few years when it comes to my place of education, the people around me and my bedroom. But just because I’ve happened to have a lot of change, that doesn’t mean that I don’t find it difficult. Every time something new happens, I have to adjust all over again which can be unsettling and it changes my routine again which I struggle with as I like a routine.

However, I’m looking forward to moving to our new house, something that too many people in our world can only ever dream about. So when looking from outside of my bubble I am one of the lucky ones to have this privilege of not only moving to a lovely neighborhood but to be able to have a choice of where we move to. It will be fun to relocate somewhere different, to a place where I think my family will like and has more to offer us, but it is a bitter-sweet change. I like where we live and our house, it has been one of the greater consistencies in the past few years of my life and I will be sad to leave this week. Despite only living here for what some might think is a short amount of time, I have many fond memories inside its walls. It’s weird to think that next week I won’t be pulling up to our drive to “be home”. Instead, another family will be sitting in our living room and someone else will be sleeping in my bedroom, an image that I struggle to imagine yet I know it will soon be a reality.

Adapting to change can be hard, but it is good to have in your life and important to allow us to grow. We all know as college students that this part of our life holds a lot of change. We spend a lot of time working out who we are and who we want to be which might mean traveling or changing our majors. We make friends and we lose friends. You may have moved to a new city to go to college or might be thinking of moving to a new city after college. All of which is very exciting, but it can be scary and unsettling.

If there’s anything I have learned from moving and change, it is to embrace the moment while you are in it and take a lot of photos to look back on. Do you ever have those moments where you are so happy and yet know that what is happening will soon be a memory? That’s why it is important to live in the moment and make the most of it while you can. Be happy for the times you have.
