A Guide to Smoothie Bowls

If you follow me on Instagram, you know just how much I love my smoothie bowls. I love the colors, the patterns, the tastes, smells, and designs that I can create. However, it took me a long time to master the skill of smoothie bowl making. I often made bowls that mixed (the wrong) flavors and just did not taste right; not to say this still doesn’t happen to me. I have compiled my best tips to help you on your smoothie bowl journey a lot smoother.

When making a smoothie bowl, a general theme is important to establish. What I mean by this, is that it is important to define what kind of flavor you want – whether it be berry inspired, tropical inspired, or dessert inspired. For me, I have found that blending together berries and a significant amount of mangoes creates a flavor that just feels wrong.

However, it goes without saying that we all have different taste buds. Although, I wasn’t a fan of berries and mangoes, you might be. This is why I emphasize the importance of trial and error. Trial and error will allow you to explore your own taste buds and identify what you like or don’t like.

One thing that I absolutely emphasize is that bananas must be included in your bowl. They are the heart and soul of smoothie bowls. They make the bowls sweeter, creamier, and more filling. The simplest way to make a delicious smoothie bowl is to blend together frozen bananas and frozen berries. It’ll give you a beautiful violet color that you won’t want to eat. You can also never go wrong with seeds. Feel free to add them into your bowl or use them as toppings to decorate.

Once you get more practice with combining different basic flavors like berries, mangoes, greens, bananas, etc., it’ll be much easier to work with flavors like pitaya and acai.

My favorite smoothie bowls are made solely from pitaya and banana and are topped with strawberries, chia seeds, granola, and hemp seeds. I absolutely adore the vibrant pink color the banans and pitaya produce.

The beauty of smoothie bowls is that you can easily customize them to fit your personal needs. I have a massive sweet tooth so all of my bowls are crazy sweet whereas my best friends smoothie bowls always have an earthy taste. As long as you’re mixing flavors that generally go together, you’ll be fine. So feel free to experiment and enjoy!
