Something I have always had a hard time doing is concentrating when my room is a mess. Now, this is an issue because my room is always a mess. I’m a very messy person. But if I try to sit down and study or write a paper and my room is a mess, I cannot do it.

A few years ago, I figured out a solution to cleaning my room that helps me get it done quickly and efficiently. For me, I mostly have clothes everywhere because I own a lot of clothes and I am very indecisive, causing clothes to be literally everywhere around my room. So naturally, I start by cleaning up everything else first because the clothes are going to take longer, and I procrastinate on everything.

The easiest place to start is with trash. I usually start with a trash bag, a big one, even if there isn’t a lot of trash. I will find more as I clean. Once the trash is thrown away, I clean my desk. I use my desk for homework and doing my makeup. Typically, I’ll put away papers, books, and pens, then move onto the makeup. I have a very precise way of organizing my makeup, so I know exactly where everything is. I probably own an equal amount of clothing and makeup, so there is a lot.

After my desk, I move onto making my bed. My bedroom gets incredibly cold in the winter because the heater doesn’t work in my room (and only in my room). Because of this, I have a lot of blankets to fold up and put away so that I can make my bed neatly, and then take them out again later that night. Sometimes I need to clean somethings on the floor too, like shopping bags, or work things.

Then I move onto my clothes. To give an idea of what I have to deal with, I have a large dresser, my closet, ottomans at the end of my bed, and a clothing rack, all overflowing with clothing. I have anywhere from 2 to 5 laundry baskets with clothes in my room at any given time. It usually takes an hour or two to take care of folding all the laundry. I get distracted easily, so my go-to movie for laundry folding is Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m obsessed with that movie and it really helps move the process along.

The easiest way for me to get the laundry done is to fold everything and separate them into piles and then put everything away. Putting the clothes away is like a big game of Tetris, where will everything fit? Sometimes it requires a lot of force to get things to close, but they do! I haven’t quite run out of space yet.

After that, my room is clean, and I can focus on what I need to get done. Having a clear space helps with having a clear mind. And having a clear mind helps to get things done. But if you can’t have a clear space for whatever reason, the library is always a really good place to get work done too. I go there when my family is being too loud, and at least there, you’re guaranteed a clean, quiet space!
