Every August, without fail, I get excited to start a new school year.  Starting a new school year signifies to me the start of something fresh and new— I always feel like I’m opening another chapter in my life.

But there are other ways to get that shiny, new feeling— other, simpler ways.

The first thing I like to do is change smells. Whether it be a candle, a perfume, shampoo, or even just body wash, changing scents around the house can give me the chance to start to build new memories associated with these smells.  My personal favorite is buying a new candle, especiallyyy with a new season.  Another thing I like to do is get my nails done. This seems like such a commonplace thing to do, but trust me, it can definitely make you feel brand new.  Another super random and seemingly common thing to do is to change your coffee creamer! This kind of reminds me of the sort of effect candles can have.

Getting this shiny and new feeling doesn’t always have to be material things that we spend money on!  Changing what time I wake up helps me feel productive and refreshed, too. Whether that be meeting myself sleep in an hour or so later on the weekends, or waking up at 6 am during the weekdays. Also, sprucing up my morning routine helps achieve this, too!  Aside from just switching up the coffee creamer, I like to add in a little “me time” where I can just read a little of a book, or flip through a magazine. I also like to add watering my plants in the morning because it helps me feel productive and to get things done for the rest of the day.

It’s always hard to find a fresh start, or turn a new leaf!  Taking the time to switch up a couple of small things at a time in your life can really help transition you from one thing to another, and can also just help you feel refreshed. It can give you a break from what may be a mundane daily schedule, and to then start something new and exciting!
