Classes, work, RSOs, homework– AHHHH! The beginning of the school year can feel like you’re spinning in mid air, getting no where, like Road Runner. You may not have your feet completely on the ground yet, so how are you expected to keep up your workout routine? Or worse yet, establish one?

Here are some tips and tricks to get back into the swing of working out with your crazy school year schedule!

Keep your workout clothes on you!

If you drive to campus, keep your clothes in your car. If you walk, bring an extra bag to tote them around in, or you can even wear them. This way, if you have free time or an unexpected cancelled class, you don’t have the temptation of going home and taking a nice little (2 hour) nap.

Find a workout buddy!

A lot of individuals enjoy working out with another person. If you struggle holding yourself accountable to stop your Netflix binge and head to the gym, having a workout partner would be the best thing for you. We tend to not like disappointing people, so knowing you have to meet someone at the gym in 20 minutes will get you there!

Prioritize self care!

Working out is good for your health, mentally and physically. It’s important to keep that in mind while trying to find time to work out. Not everything can be about working and it’s important to keep the hard working machine you are oiled up and happy through some healthy time at the gym! Working out will help increase your productivity, not stall it.

HAVE FUN!

Missing one day at the gym will not make you “fat”. If all of your friends are heading to the bars, a tailgate, or just going out to dinner GO! College is about making memories to tell your grandchildren one day. It’s not all work and no play. But, keep in mind you need to have BALANCE. All play and no work isn’t ideal either! I hope you find the balance you need this school year between all your responsibilities and your health. It’s not always easy finding time to workout, but I’m cheering you on!

My name is Cassie Malhado and I’m a sophomore at Central Michigan University. Raised in the small town of Imlay City, coming to university has allowed me to expand my comfort zone. Currently, I am studying Journalism: Public Relations Concentration with a minor in Applied Business Communication to do public relations work for a non-profit or corporation after graduation. On campus I am a member of the Honors Program, am a public relations executive for Central Michigan Life, run the social media and belong to the editorial board for the academic journal The Honors Platform, and am a sister of the Delta Zeta chapter of Alpha Chi Omega. I am excited to add events planner for Her Campus on my list of involvements as well! My passions include politics, traveling, and rollerblading with Her Campus Editor-in-Chief, Kara, which I cannot wait to write more about.
