A Borderline Girl Trying to Define Herself: A Poetry Collection

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Part I: Who I Am

I am whole and enough

I worry I’ll never find stability

I cry because all I can do is try

I understand I need to start being positive

I touch words of affirmation

I feel myself changing

I say I’m making progress

I try to have self-compassion

I hope that one day I’ll believe

I am whole and enough

Part II: A Bookshelf

I believe I am a bookshelf

Sturdy and strong

With many stories happy and sad

But all of them belong

I believe I am a bookshelf

Full of fleeting quotes

And endless memories

In the stories that I hold

I believe I am a bookshelf

Crowded but incomplete

With room to add more stories

From the people that I meet

I believe I am a bookshelf

And to the people that I’ve known

Thank you for your contributions

You are the reason that I’ve grown

Part III: An Imperfect Flower

I guess I grew with a crooked stem

And my stem has always had more thorns than petals

And my petals have always been a little discolored

But I am still a flower

Who, despite all this, has bloomed

And that’s what makes me beautiful

C Mich '21

Hi, my name is Tess and I’m a double major in Journalism and Women and Gender studies at Central Michigan University. Planning to become a media writer after I graduate. I want to empower people through my writing and hope to someday write a book on the intersection of Feminism and Paganism. I’m a huge crafter, I love knitting and altering clothes I find at thrift stores. I listen to a lot of audiobooks in my free time. I’m really excited to be co-campus correspondent and Editor-in-Chief for HerCampus-CMich and continue to develop my voice, writing and leadership skills.
