The Secrets of Healthy, Glowing Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Glowing, clear skin is the ultimate goal; for some of us, this goal is impossible to reach and maintain. Over the past several years, I have been searching for a solution to the unsolicited breakout. With a lot of trial and error, I have gathered several skincare secrets that have given me the healthiest and most glowy skin yet!

Making some simple changes in my lifestyle and skincare regimen have completely changed my skin.

1. Drink Water

Water is key to having clear, glowing skin! Being hydrated is essential to your health. Water flushes the toxins out of your body and helps avoid acne. It makes your skin more elastic and glowy. Ever since I have increased my daily water intake, I feel better and had noticed the difference in my skin. This is a simple and overlooked skincare secret. Get a travel water bottle to use throughout the day and try to refill it several times to get your daily intake of water.

2.  Make a Skincare Routine

It is so important to have a regimented skincare routine. For example, I like to wash my face once in the morning and once in the evening. I also use different products for morning and evening. Of course, everything works differently for different skin type so ultimately, find what works best for you!

3. Use Toner

Most people overlook toner; it is a solution that cleanses and nourishes your skin. It’s great to apply after washing your face and before moisturizing. It is this one extra step that made a huge difference for my skin.

4. Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliating regularly is great for replenishing skin. Use a spinning face brush or exfoliating scrub to clean your skin well. It helps prevent clogged pores and makes your skin even. I try to exfoliate a couple of times per week.

5. Avoid Certain Foods

What you put into your body matters! After observing my breakout pattern, I realized that certain foods made me breakout. Rich foods with lots of sugar and dairy are known breakout triggers. Eating more fruits and vegetables can easily help you achieve glowy skin. It is okay to indulge, but remember to eat everything in moderation!

6. Remove Your Makeup

Thoroughly removing makeup is essential! Makeup causes clogged pores if not removed correctly. I use a micellar cleansing water to clean my skin thoroughly. I find that wipes don’t remove every bit of makeup. No matter what makeup remover you use, follow up by washing your face to be thorough.

7. Sweat It Out

Physical activity keeps your body healthy and is great for your skin! Purging the toxins from your body helps prevent breakouts from forming in the first place and targets the problem at the source.

These small, yet effective steps have dramatically changed the condition of my skin. Healthy, glowing skin is possible when you treat yourself to some extra TLC. Our body is irreplaceable and it is so important to treat it with great care. I hope what I’ve learned can help you achieve the skin you want and will love!
