The Smartest Purchase for Your Dorm Room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryn Mawr chapter.

After receiving admission to colleges, I remember being really excited to start shopping for my dorm room.  With so many options and items to choose from, the bills for frivolous purchases could’ve racked up very quickly.  So, in spite of my enthusiasm to make my room as pretty as possible, I wanted to figure out how to prioritize my spending and invest in a few quality items that I could use for all four years.

Sleep is essential, and all college students should cherish every minute of sleep they can get.  That being said, I think the biggest investment you should make when it comes to dorm room purchases is in your bedding.  As a current junior in college, I’ve learned not to take sleep for granted. There’s a huge difference in the quality of my work and the productivity of my day on nights when I get a solid eight hours of sleep versus when I get a restless six hours of sleep.  I’ve been using Buffy products for a while now, and they’ve made the biggest difference in my sleep habits and patterns. Here are my favorite items from them!

Eucalyptus Sheets

These are naturally soft, naturally-dyed sheets that will make you instantly want to cozy up in bed and fall asleep.  I have these sheets in Dark Gray, which are dyed with pomegranate and tea. There are five other colors to choose from including Light Gray (dyed with pomegranate and tea), Blush (dyed with gardenia, walnut and turmeric), White (no bleach or harmful dyes), Light Blue (dyed with indigo, safflower and rose) and Dark Blue (dyed with indigo and safflower).  Each sheet set includes a fitted sheet, topsheet and two standard pillowcases, and the size range includes every bed size possible: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King. My sheets are Twin XL, which is the standard bed size for most college dorm rooms. I tend to stick with neutral colors, so I chose Dark Gray because it goes perfectly with my pillows, the rest of my room, and especially my white comforter.  The first time I put these sheets on my bed, I was immediately amazed by how soft and cool-to-the-touch they were. These are truly the softest sheets I have, and I noticed a stark difference in the quality of these sheets that I have in my dorm room versus the non-Buffy sheets I have at home.

If the pure comfort, softness, and overall incredible quality of the sheets weren’t enough to convince you to try them, the Eucalyptus Sheets are also earth-friendly, hypoallergenic, and 100% eucalyptus.  They contain no bleach or harsh chemicals, which makes them much better for the earth than most other sheet sets. Woven from Oeko-Tex certified, earth-friendly fiber, these sheets are extremely breathable and ultra-lightweight.  I was worried that the sheets would lose their softness after putting them in the wash, but these 300 single-ply thread count sheets are actually designed to get even softer after every wash! Now that I’ve tried the Eucalyptus Sheets, I can’t imagine buying anything from now on.

Breeze Comforter

As you might gather from the name, the Breeze Comforter is a cool-to-the-touch, temperature-regulating, 100% eucalyptus comforter designed for hot sleepers.  It comes in three different sizes: Twin/Twin XL, Full/Queen and King/California King. I have this in Twin/Twin XL, which is the perfect size for my college bed.   Perfect for the warmer months of the year, the super-soft 100% eucalyptus shell and fill keep you comfy without being too warm. Unlike polyester or down, which is what other warm comforters are typically filled with, eucalyptus helps prevent you from overheating because it’s naturally breathable and cool-to-the-touch.

Like the sheets, this comforter is not only great for a good night’s sleep, but it’s also great for the earth.  The eucalyptus Buffy uses is grown in renewable forests in Austria that use 10x less water than cotton, and it’s transformed into ultra-smooth fiber through a waste-free production process.  With a wave stitching pattern that keeps the eucalyptus fill in place, the Breeze Comforter is designed to keep you cool and comfortable all night. If you live in a warm climate or tend to run hot when you sleep, I highly recommend trying this out for a good night’s sleep!

Cloud Comforter

Lastly, we come to the incredibly soft, extra-fluffy original Cloud Comforter.  Like the Breeze, you can purchase this in three sizes: Twin/Twin XL, Full/Queen and King/California King.  Given that this is the softest, fluffiest and coziest comforter I’ve ever had, it’s very aptly named. The first night I slept with this, I fell asleep almost immediately.  The only downside to how comfy this makes you feel is that it’s going to be even harder to pull yourself out of bed in the morning. It’s currently below freezing outside, and sometimes the heat in my room doesn’t work as well as I’d like it to.  Before using the Cloud Comforter, there were mornings when I would wake up freezing. Now, this keeps me so warm and cozy, and it’s very conducive to having a restful sleep. As opposed to the Breeze, this is perfect for colder climates and those who tend to run cold at night.  I use this every night now during the winter, and I couldn’t imagine going without it.

Just like the Eucalyptus Sheets and Breeze Comforter, this is not only insanely soft and cozy with its 300 single-ply thread count, but it’s also good for the environment.  It’s cruelty-free, filled with layers of 100% recycled PET, BPA-free fiber, and each comforter recycles approximately 50 plastic bottles! The triangle stitching pattern keeps the fill in place while the 100% eucalyptus fiber shell keeps you nice and warm.  If you’re unsure which Buffy product to get first, I suggest trying the Cloud Comforter out. It’s their most popular, highly-rated product – and deservedly so. This will definitely keep me cozy for the rest of the winter season!

My mom will be happy to know that I really enjoy making my bed now.  I love feeling how soft my sheets and comforter are, and these products have actually made a huge difference in the quality of my sleep.  The one downside that I will point out is the price point of this brand. These products are expensive at $175 for the Eucalyptus Sheets, $180 for the Breeze Comforter, and $130 for the Cloud Comforter.  Admittedly, before receiving the products, I couldn’t fathom spending that much on bedding. Having used them for a long period of time now, I think it would be worth purchasing these at the beginning of your college career.  Another way to look at it is that you’re investing in a high-quality, durable set of sheets and a comforter for four years instead of buying an average-quality set of sheets and a comforter at the beginning of each new school year.  In this sense, I think it’s well worth the money. If you want to give these a try but still aren’t entirely convinced that they’re worth the hefty price tag, you can use HERCAMPUS20 for $20 off any comforter or sheets purchase!  All Buffy products also offer a free trial, so you can test any product free of charge for seven nights before you commit to buying.  This is a great way to see for yourself just how amazing these products are, and, if and when you choose to purchase them, these are purchases you won’t regret!
