We all have rough days. Rough weeks, even. Maybe you just failed a test, are having some family struggles, or are dealing with a roommate from hell. It happens to the best of us and you’re not alone. Oftentimes it’s hard to snap out of it when life gives you a bunch of lemons. So here are some things I do to pick myself up when life gets tough!

Watch a movie or TV

Whenever I’m down, I have a list of shows and movies on Netflix and Disney+ that I’ll put on. I find peace in something familiar that I can recite every single word or line to, whether it be Lilo and Stitch or Grey’s Anatomy. Sometimes, the characters can even get me laughing and feeling a lot better, and sometimes I can relate to them. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show (or movie) for a few hours!

Listen to Music

Music is absolutely amazing. Sometimes, the right song can make you want to dance, cry and scream all at the same time. For example, I am a huge Taylor Swift fan, so jamming out to “Shake it Off” or “You Belong With Me” is an instant mood booster. There are also some podcasts that I enjoy listening to that make me laugh and take me to a happier place! So girl, put your records on!

Eat Comfort Foods

We all have that one food that when you eat it, it reminds you of something great. For me, it’s probably Ben and Jerry’s Half Baked or some mozzarella sticks that I’ll pop in the air fryer. If I have the supplies on hand, baking (and eating) brownies or cookies is something that I always enjoy . If you don’t feel like baking, Insomnia Cookies are always there, and it’s saved me a bunch of times when I just can’t find the energy to bake something. Do not be afraid to indulge- eat as much of whatever comfort food you want! These calories don’t count.

Take a Shower or Bath

Occasionally, taking a shower or bath can help you relax. Remember those Lush bath bombs that have been sitting under your sink for ages? Now’s their time to shine. Put on a face or hair mask, some appropriate bath or shower music, read a book, and wash those tough times down the drain.

Get Active

When you’re feeling down, the last thing you probably want to do is step foot onto a treadmill. But trust me, it really does help put you in a better mood. Since the weather’s getting warmer, I really enjoy going for a stroll around my neighborhood and just taking in the fresh air. But since we are in the arctic tundra known as Binghamton, an indoor activity like Just Dance! is perfect. I’m a terrible dancer, but dancing to my favorite tunes makes me so happy.

Talk About It

As someone who keeps to herself, this is one of the scariest things to do. Talking about these things is a surefire way to realize you are not alone in your struggles, and whoever you talk to might have some advice to help you get through it! I am beyond grateful to have an amazing support system, and even though it took me a while, I now feel like I can talk to them about anything that’s getting me down.

I know that these tough times may seem like they last forever. They don’t, trust me. Whatever you’re going through is most likely temporary, and you are going through it for a reason in order to learn something. I hope that these tips will help you, and remember, you’re not alone in anything you’re going through, and don’t be afraid to ask for help!
