Reminders For Resolutions

I think a lot of the time people have these big expectations that everything will change overnight when they’re striving to develop new habits. A big example of this would be new years revolutions, or all of the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of a school year or semester.

However, it’s common for these resolutions or goals to start fading, and we find ourselves back in the same old routine that we were not happy in. I believe that it is important to give yourself some grace.

  1. New habits will not stick without routine.

What this means is that if you want things to change, you have to be consistent. However, if you’re consistent, and you’re not happy with a routine, it’s okay to make adjustments and changes. The most important thing is that you’re doing something that improves how you feel about your life. If you’re not having a good time in a new routine, you can change things in a way that brings you joy.

  2. Don’t expect things to change overnight.

Becoming more athletic isn’t something that’s going to happen magically, it’s a gradual change. Quitting coffee or doing more volunteer work isn’t something that has to happen all at once. It’s important to find balance and gradually change things so as to not disrupt or overwhelm you.

  3. Set small goals, rather than big ones.

Oftentimes, people set these drastic goals that are not always realistic for them. The best way to achieve a long-term goal is to set smaller, more achievable goals to reach along the way. If by 2027, you do not want to drink coffee anymore. You would start small by gradually lowering the amount of coffee you’re having in a week or month. If by the end of 2026, you want to be able to run a 10k marathon. You’re not gonna run a 10k in the first week of January. You would start small and work your way up so you don’t hurt yourself.

  4. Lastly, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t meet a goal that you’ve set.

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and sometimes the universe has other plans for us. Also, don’t feel pressured to have goals if you’re comfortable with where you’re at.  Sometimes change is over time, and we barely notice it until we look back. January is the middle of winter, it’s a time where the earth rests, and it isn’t until spring starts to bloom that we see how far we have come from the cold January mornings.

Remember to breathe and take everything one day at a time. You’ve got this!

Much love,

Keela
