The summer before I started my freshman year at college, I actually worked out everyday. I used to run a mile and then would do a 35-50 minute session with my Nike Fit App. And this was everyday. If I missed a day, I would double up the next day.

But then I came to college. You can probably guess where this is going. In my first semester, I would work out once a week, two if it was a good week. I even bought a season pass to go to gym classes, but I always thought I was too swamped with homework (jokes as a first semester freshman) to even make time for the gym.

Truthfully, that’s a lie. You just need to prioritize working out; it’s a health necessity! This is the ultimate gym guide (motivation & work out tips):

1. Workout in the morning, so you’ll never “not have time.”

Now I know you’re probably thinking that waking up an extra hour early just to work out sounds brutal. But it gets your workout out of they way, leaving you with more time throughout the day to do whatever you want.

2. Go to the gym with a buddy.

Make plans to go to the gym with a friend, that way you’ll be forced to go! Not only does it make you more committed, but you have someone to talk to during your workout. Plus, you can always vent to them about your sore legs the next day, and they’ll totally understand.

3. Join a class!

You’ve entered the gym, now what? First off, don’t panic. My best advice would be to sign up for a gym class. AU offers group classes for almost every type of workout! You can try out a class for only $7, or buy a season pass for $65. They are an excellent use of time and you have support from others trying to get in shape as well — not to mention you have fitness instructors who will help you along the way.

My personal favorite classes include Piloxing (at Jacobs) & Step and Sculpt (at Cassell)

Tip: Get the season pass and be sure to get there at least 10 minutes before class time in order to get a good spot. You can obtain a season pass at the front desk (where you swipe in)!

4. Utilize the fitness room whenever it’s empty!

I cannot stress how amazing these rooms are. They’re so much more efficient compared to the treadmill or elliptical machines from the cardio section!

I’d recommend taking one of the steps, and doing some of the moves below:

You can also bring in a lighter weight medicine ball from outside to do Russian twists, among other things.

5. Download the Nike Fit App

The app creates workouts for you, depending on how much time you have, or if you want to target specific areas. Do your Nike workouts in the fitness room, and let people see how intense you are. It really whips your booty into shape.

If the app isn’t really your thing, I’d recommend checking out Casey Ho from Blogilates. Casey is a total fitness guru, and will inspire you to keep working out. Turn to her when you want a nice pilates instructed video.

5. Finally in the winter months, bring your winter coat.

I know this sounds obvious, but don’t forget to bundle up on your walk to the gym. Just stuff your coat in a locker when you arrive! Personally, I just feel a lot happier walking to the gym when I’m not being assaulted by the wind when wearing only a windbreaker.
