3 Self-Care Tips for College Students: How to Survive the Rest of the Fall Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Now that midterms are over, most of the stress from classes is gone (thankfully!). However, everyone is looking forward to Thanksgiving.  If you’re not a freshman, you know once Thanksgiving break hits, it’s really hard to get back into the swing of things. At this point, all I can think about is taking naps in my Christmas pajamas, baking cookies, and opening presents. So how can you keep yourself focused to make it out of the Fall semester strong? Here are a few self-care ideas to keep yourself on top of your game, avoid burnout, and aim for that 4.0 GPA!

1. Get enough rest

  • This can be really challenging, especially with so many assignments coming up. You may want to pull an all-nighter to finish your last essay. It’s important to keep your body well rested- particularly during flu season! I recommend listening to some meditation to help with sleep. You can do this in bed to help fall asleep or during the day to recharge. There are plenty of free guided meditation videos on Youtube as well as free apps, so I definitely suggest checking those out.

2. Journaling

  • Writing all of your feelings out can truly help to relieve stress and help you stay focused on what is important. We do so much writing every day as college students, sometimes it feels like a chore to write in a journal. There are solutions to this for those who like to journal but don’t feel they have enough time. The 5- minute journal gives you quick prompts to write about each day, such as “3 Amazing Things that Happened Today”. You can also do this on your own, just grab an empty notebook and some pretty colored pens!

3. Bath Bombs

  • At the end of a long day of classes, who doesn’t love to come home to a warm bath? My favorite thing to do to unwind is use a bathbomb. Not only do they smell amazing and have pretty colors, but they’re also great for taking pictures. You can use a bath bomb on its own, or combine it with bath oils and bubble bars to make the perfect scent! Grab your favorite bath bomb, a hot cup of tea, and relax at the end of the day- you deserve it!

These are just some of the many ways to practice self-care (you can even combine all 3 ideas!). I hope after reading this article you give at least one of these a try and feel some improvement. College is incredibly stressful, and burnout is so common among students it’s okay to feel overwhelmed at times. At the end of the day, it is really important to take care of yourself first because you can’t help others if you’re not taking care of you.
