Five Best Moments of the Golden Globes 2017!

The Golden Globes on January 8th marked the beginning of this year’s awards season, celebrating the biggest films and television series of the last year in highly entertaining fashion. So here is a rundown of five of the best moments from this year’s show:

  1. The Musical Opening Number

The show’s host Jimmy Fallon payed tribute to Hollywood hit La La Land in his lively opening number to the show.  An array of stars took part in the performance inspired by the original songs of the modern classic, with standout moments including a rap sequence by the kids of Stranger Things (and the return of fan favourite Barb!) and Fallon’s re-enactment of the now iconic flying scene from the film with partner Justin Timberlake.

  1. Dev Patel’s Mini-Me

Dev Patel took to the stage with his co-star Sunny Pawar, his adorable mini-me in their matching tuxedos, to introduce their new film Lion, in which they both play Saroo Brierley during different stages of his life.  Despite the film not winning an award on the night, its young star still managed to completely steal the show.

  1. Kristen Wiig and Steve Carrell

Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell claimed one of the funniest moments of the night whilst presenting the award for Best Animated Feature Film to Zootopia. The comedic duo had the audience in stitches as they greeted their “peers and regular people,” before hilariously sharing memories of their favourite animated films from childhood. It was a big night for hit film La La Land, which won all seven of the awards it was nominated for, breaking the Golden Globes record for most awards taken home by a film.  Their wins included Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category, Best Director for Damien Chazelle, and best acting awards for the film’s stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.  Gosling melted many hearts during his speech giving praise to his “sweetheart” Eva Mendes and their two daughters, whilst fans were delighted that Emma Stone’s win was met by a standing ovation by some of the audience, including her ex-boyfriend Andrew Garfield.

  1. Queen Meryl!

The most talked about moment from this year’s ceremony was Meryl Streep’s speech upon winning her lifetime achievement Cecil B DeMille award.  Streep used the moment, which recognised her lifetime of outstanding work, to show her gratitude, but also present a gracious attack against newly appointed president Donald Trump.  She highlighted a “performance” from the past year which stood out to her: “There was one performance this year that stunned me.  It sank its hooks in my heart.  Not because it was good, there was nothing good about it, but it was effective and it did its job.  It was the moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter.  Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.”  Meryl Streep’s words highlighting Trump’s bullying nature made twitter blow up and were met with praise from the press and evoked an emotional reaction from the show’s audience – “And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
