Selena Gomez Might Be Retiring From Music & I’m Not OK

Selena Gomez has announced that she’s pretty much done with music. The singer appeared on an episode of the SmartLess podcast — which is set to be released on Jan. 8 — to talk about her experience in the entertainment industry. Though she’s done a lot over the years, Gomez revealed that her music career could be coming to an end, saying she feels “like I have one more album in me.”Gomez has experienced a lot in the music industry, with many highs — her rise as a Disney star and singer  — and lows.

Gomez is not only a singer and an actress, but she’s also the CEO of her own cosmetics line, Rare Beauty, which she launched back in 2020. The makeup line has a nonprofit division, called the Rare Impact Fund, which aims to raise $100 million and bring mental health awareness globally through services and education for the youth.

It’s been four years since Gomez released her last album, Rare, and it seems the next musical project she releases might be her last.

For now, Gomez has made it clear that she’ll be focusing on her acting career after releasing her next album.  “I have one more album in me, but I would probably choose acting,” Gomez said on the podcast. The hosts questioned her decision as they admired her musical talents, but Gomez said that creating music is making her “tired”.

The singer released her latest pop track “Single Soon” in August 2023 and has more music brewing up for the release of her upcoming album. In December 2023, she revealed that her fourth studio album will be released sometime in February of this year.

Gomez said that her album will have no “sad songs” while speaking to Vogue Mexico

The singer has made many some memorable tracks over the years, from “Come & Get it”, and “Good For You” featuring A$AP Rocky, to “Kill Em With Kindness” and “Calm Down” with Afrobeats artist, Rema, which received a certified triple platinum by the RIAA. Not to mention, some of her hits were created with the help of her boyfriend and music producer, Benny Blanco.

She told the SmartLess hosts, “The older I get, the more I’m kind of like, ‘I would like to find something to just settle on.’”

Gomez admitted that singing wasn’t her first choice or passion. She was thrown into the industry because of her role as a Disney star. She revealed SmartLess, “I wanted to be an actress, I never really intended on being a singer full-time, but apparently that hobby turned into something else.” She then acknowledged that although she doesn’t think she’s the best singer, she knows how to tell stories and loves being able to do so in her songs.

Although it’s sad to hear that Gomez might be leaving music behind, it’s also heart-warming to see the singer embrace her acting career, just like old times!
