Are The Marriages In ‘Love Is Blind’ *Actually* Real & Legally Binding?

Like the rest of the internet, Season 3 of Netflix’s Love Is Blind has been all I’ve been thinking about lately. I eat, sleep, and breathe Love Is Blind. I wake up and wonder which couples are going to walk down the aisle (Bartise and Nancy better not), then go down a Twitter rabbit hole of memes about Andrew’s fake tears and Raven’s pod jumping jacks. But another thing I can’t stop thinking about is if the marriages in Love Is Blind are actually real and legally binding — like, is that even possible? I mean, these people have only known each other for a few weeks — there’s no way they actually get married, right?

Wrong. In 2020, when Season 1 of Love Is Blind first hit screens (does anyone remember what a whirlwind of a season that was?), Love Is Blind creator Chris Coelen told Bustle that the marriages on the show are, in fact, legally binding. “If they choose to get married, yes, it’s a legally binding marriage,” Coelen said. Whoa — so this really is the real deal, then.

Former Season 1 contestant Lauren Speed-Hamilton, who fell in love with Cameron Hamilton in the pods and married him (and they’re still together, which is just major goals), confirmed to Refinery29 that it was all real. “We definitely did. That’s the part that was so scary for me,” Speed-Hamilton told Refinery29 back in 2020. “This is a real legally binding marriage. This is not for TV. This is our life.” Hamilton added, “I framed [the marriage license] and put it up in my office.” OK, aww.

More than that, contestants have to chip in to pay for their weddings. “Of course production supplies some of the basics but because these are their real weddings, it’s up to them as to how to spend their money,” Coelen explained to Bustle. So, if Raven wants to have a post-reception pilates sesh at her wedding, I’m assuming that’s out of pocket?

But beyond getting married, some couples from Love Is Blind have gotten divorced, too, proving that the marriages are — or were — legally binding. Former Season 2 contestant Danielle Ruhl filed for a divorce from Nick Thompson in August 2022 after a year of marriage. Records obtained by E! News found that Ruhl submitted the divorce papers to a Chicago court on Aug. 15. So yeah — it all really is legit.

Which couples will *for real* get married in Season 3 of Love Is Blind? The next three episodes (episodes eight through 10) drop on Wednesday, Nov. 2, so we’ll just have to wait and see. (If Alexa and Brennon don’t end up together, I don’t want it.)
