Exercise has never been my jam. Yes – I was one of the many students who got a membership for ASV in their first year of uni, vowing that they’ll be more fit now that they are independent adults, before quickly realising that they simply can’t be bothered. I tried and tried, but each time I found myself thinking, ‘why am I doing this?’ or ‘who do I think I am?’ or, even, ‘I don’t belong in this gym with all these other extremely fit people.’

I’ve set this up pretty well, and I’m sure you’re wondering how I finally overcame this hump. The answer is Couch to 5k ladies and gentlemen, the best app for any of you out there who, like me, never want to leave the comfort of your bed to go and *gags* exercise.

The Couch to 5k app was developed by the NHS to get more of the nation off their bums and moving their bodies. It’s been around for a pretty long time now, and boasts a plethora of success stories from people who, prior to beginning the programme, struggled to run continuously for more than a minute. It really does take users from their couch to a full 5k over the course of 9 weeks, gradually increasing in intensity as the weeks go on. For example, week 1 has you running for 30 seconds then walking for 90 seconds – the workout alternates like this until 20 minutes have passed. The app encourages you to do this workout 3 times before moving on to week 2, which increases in intensity a little bit more. Before you know it, the app is asking you to run for 20 minutes continuously and, to your surprise, you can actually do it. I never thought I’d be able to run a 5k, but here we are. If I, the world’s laziest person who is constantly attached to a hot water bottle in the comfort of their bed, can do it, then honestly anyone can.

If you need further reason to head on over to the app store and download this wonderful app FOR FREE then wait until you hear this; you get to choose who coaches you throughout the programme and your options include Sarah Millican – excellent!

I completed the programme in August and haven’t looked back since. I still run 3 or 4 times a week and have massively felt both the physical and mental benefits. Never underestimate the potential for exercise to improve your focus and general wellbeing; I’ve never slept so well in my life, had so much energy, and now feel even more productive than I was before. So, what are you waiting for? Go and download the Couch to 5k app and leave the sedentary life behind you – having a lazy day feels so much better when you’ve already smashed a 5k in the morning.
