Shaking It For “Steps To Awareness”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Last Monday, October 14th Her Campus UNH hosted a “Steps To Awareness” Zumba Class and Breast Cancer Education event! It was an awesome night of dancing, working out and trying to make our moves look as good as Beyoncé’s.

Participants were able to buy raffle tickets and enter  to win raffle prizes that were donated by local businesses for the event. A huge thank you to Greater Than Sports, Stonewall Kitchen, Institute of Skin Science, Solsistar, Prove People Wrong and the many other companies that contributed to the cause.

The University of New Hampshire’s own Red Bull Representatives provided our event with TONS of Red Bull. We loved the new Lime, Cranberry and Blueberry Edition flavors!  Just a few sips and we were energized and ready to shake it!

Particiapants were able to share who they were “stepping for.” A shout-out to friends, family and loved ones who are or who have been affected by breast cancer.

Fueling up on Red Bull, stretching and preparing to shake it!

While we may not have danced as well as Beyoncé, we did raise over $300! All will be donated to Susan G. Komen For The Cure. We learned after the event that our own zumba instructor; Kathy Kerrigan created her own organization called “Kathy for a Cure.” Whose proceeds go to the Beyond the Rainbow fund, which provides financial assistance and support to local cancer patients in need. Like their Facebook page by searching “Kathy for the cure,” for more information about their organization, and about other exercise classes Kathy teaches year-round!

We also would like to thank UNH Health Services for providing us with Beast Cancer Education. We learned how to perform self-breast exams! Thank you, UNH Health Services for keeping us aware, informed and healthy!

Lastly, we’d like to thank everyone who participated at the event and everyone who made this event possible. Thank you for a night of laughs, education and fun for a great cause. Keep on shaking it, everyone, HCxo!
