Being busy university students, it’s sometimes hard to make sure to eat well when you’re on the go. It’s so easy to reach for that bag of chips or box of cookies- if you even remember to pack a snack at all- but doing that so often isn’t always good for you and can easily burn a hole through your wallet. Healthy snacking is a good starting point for integrating healthier habits into your lifestyle. Here are some budget friendly snacks you can make at home and eat throughout the week. Most of the mentioned recipes only have one main ingredient and can be made or seasoned using ingredients and spices you probably already have in your kitchen.
1) Homemade Garlic Parmesan Popcorn: Popcorn is a quick and easy snack and making it at home avoids all of the extra junk that comes with pre-packaged stuff. You can even get creative by adding dressings and flavours yourself like garlic or a dash of cheese. Here’s a recipe for a simple way to add flavour.
2) Kale Chips: This is a snack that should last you a while if you make enough. It’s also an interesting way of incorporating vegetables into your diet. You can make healthy chips using other vegetables as well, so if you don’t like kale, try making: apple, tomato, sweet potato, or banana chips.
3) Mango Fruit Roll-Up: Is it just me, or does anyone else miss being a kid and finding fruit roll-ups in your lunchbox? Using real fruit is a healthier option that’s still sweet (minus the added sugar).
4) Toasted Pumpkin Seeds: In the spirit of fall and Halloween, here’s a microwave-friendly recipe for spicing up pumpkin seeds.
Also, if you can’t make snacks in advance, you can find some of the previously mentioned snacks in store. Just avoid unhealthy versions that are high in salt or sugar and try to stick to the natural versions. With snacking, it’s all about replacing some of the bad with the good (as inexpensively as you can), so don’t forget to make better choices altogether.
