Healthy Habits: #7

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

The time has come! I have packed away all my jean shorts and brought out my big sweaters and fuzzy socks. I hate the cold, even more than that I hate exercising when there’s a chance of snow in the forecast. So now I’ll be spending a lot of time in the gym, which gets super repetitive and boring. Then how do I motivate myself to get there?? WORKOUT CLASSES! I let the instructors worry about making creative workouts and I have to stay the whole time or else weird looks are shot my way. For this week I’m going to focus on my favorite class, TRX!

TRX is suspension strength training. There is a frame in which you attach a strap with two handles. Using your body weight and different movement, you can work almost any part of your body. If workout classes aren’t your thing but switching up your routine seems like a fun idea, rental straps are available for free with your BuckId in the RPAC!

So to start off, why did I start going? I was looking for something to switch up my normal cardio and strength training. TRX sounded like nothing I would ever attempt on my own so I went to one class. Why have I kept going? That’s easy! The instructor, Mary, is amazing!

Mary is a veteran at teaching the class; she has been for four years! She makes the class super easy to join. There are so many modified movements that she provides so you don’t have to worry about your beginning strength level. During my first class I couldn’t complete a push up. Now, she has me doing them all the time!

When asked what her favorite exercises were she said, “I particularly like the core exercises in TRX. The ability to suspend your feet during a movement such as a plank provides a new challenge! Adding movement while having your feet suspended increases difficulty and is one of my favorite things to introduce to a class!”

During her class, you can expect to get a full body workout and if you don’t feel it right away, when you TRY and get out of bed tomorrow you sure will. If you have any personal goals she will tailor some movements just for you. Mine right now is being able to do a handstand in open space so she’s always on me about getting a good upper body workout. She keeps it interesting in class by having circuits and they are never the same week to week.

Going to this class will definitely help anyone struggling, like me, with the winter weather. If you like this class other ones to check out are: cross training, circuit cycle and full body challenge!

My name is Josie Walter. I'm a third year at THE Ohio State University! I love my buckeyes and this campus as a whole. I am in school to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a specific course of Pre-Health. Originally I am from Wilsonville, Or just 20 minutes south of downtown Portland. (Yes, Portlandia is a realistic comparison to the city). I was however born in Las Vegas and thats where my HEART still is. With a couple jobs, trying to maintain an active lifestyle, stay on top of school work and have great friends life has flown by! I am determined to make these last couple years I have at OSU the absolute best!
