Once, I was listening to an NPR podcast called All Songs Considered, and the announcers were discussing different types of music, but not in the sense of genre. Rather, it was based on the bodyās reaction to the song.
Ā
Thereās āwhole bodyā music, like Turn Down For What for example, that makes you want to jump out of your seat, and shake it from head to toe. Then thereās āabove the hipā music, the kind that makes you playfully sway in your seat, like some soulful BublĆ©. Finally, thereās āabove the neckā music. Ā This is the one that struck me most.
Ā
Above the neck music is the kind of music that, as my sister so eloquently describes as āmusic that makes you want to curl up into a ball and just lay there and listen to itā. Ā Sheās right, and this is hands down some of my favourite music! Here are my top 5 favourite above the neck artists and songs.Ā
Ā
1- Anything by Bon Iver
And by anything, I do mean all his work. What excellent music! My favourite above the neck songs by Iver are Flume and Michicant.

2- Tenenbaum by The Paper Kites
Iāve only recently discovered this group and Iām totally in love. The Paper Kites recently played at Bluesfest and after having seen them live, I can tell you that this Australian band is going places.Ā

3- Run by HozierĀ
Weāve all heard his hit song Take Me To Church, but buy the whole album (extended edition), and listen to it on loop. Itāll be the best thing youāve ever done; trust me. This guy is a musical genius.Ā

4- Sunburn by Ed Sheeran
I donāt need to tell you Ed Sheeran is awesome. You should already know that.Ā
Ā
Ā
5- To Build A Home by The Cinematic Orchestra Ft. Patrick Watson
This song could be on repeat for the rest of my life and I still wouldnāt get sick of it. Itās absolute perfection.Ā
