Couch to 5K: Training For Your First Race

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

Have you considered doing a 5K but have never been  much of a runner? Here are some training tips to get you up off that couch and running (or walking!) your first 5K.

Beginning Your Training

When you begin training, you start with a run/walk tree times a week for 20-30 minutes each. Space out these days so that your body has time to recover in between each one.

Running for Time/Distance

Once you get use to running/walking, work on increasing your distance and/or decreasing your time. Choose whichever option works best for you.

Couch to 5K Training Plan

There is an actual plan and app you can download to help you train. Here is what the schedule looks like:

Now that you have the tools you need, get out running, and good luck!

I am a freshman attending the University of Wisconsin Stout. My major is Professional Communication and Emerging Media with a concentration in Applied Journalism. I am from a small town in Southeast Wisconsin. I love everything and anything Disney. Recently, I have gotten into RunDisney. It brings my love of Disney together with living a healthier lifestyle. After college, I hope to obtain a job with Disney, preferably in the RunDisney division.
