The Blonde Baker: Spritz Sprinkle Cookies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

25 days of Christmas cookies! Yes, December is the month of cookies. Christmas cookie baking is my favorite kind of baking. For as long as I can remember, the women in my family would spend hours in the kitchen baking cookies during Christmas time. One of my favorite cookies during the holidays is a light, delicate, buttery cookie called a Spritz. A Spritz is a German cookie, otherwise known as Spritzgebäck. My great- grandmother Dorothy used to make these cookies, and passed down her recipe and cookie press to my mother, and now me. These cookies are not only delicious, but also very pretty. They are time consuming, but worth the labor. You will be covered in sprinkles by the time you finish these! Who doesn’t want that? Enjoy!

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened

½ cup sugar

1 egg

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

¼ teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons almond extract

{food coloring if desired}

Sprinkles!

Directions:

Heat oven to 400ºF. Beat butter and sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy. Stir in flour, salt, egg, almond extract and a few drops of food color/ gel.

Place dough in cookie press. Form desired shapes on ungreased cookie sheet. Decorate with lots and lots of SPRINKLES!

Bake 5 to 8 minutes or until set, but not brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. To decorate cookies after baking, you can use a drop of corn syrup to attach more sprinkles to cookies.
