Fight the Freshman 15: How to Stay Healthy on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

The combination of stress and meal plans can often lead to unwanted weight gain. Even if that’s not your concern, everyone can use some health tips and easy recipes! Making small changes to your  choices as an on-campus resident or commuter can add up to a healthier lifestyle.

Know your options.

Be aware of what food options your school provides and what your meal plan entails. Many schools have healthier options, however, because they aren’t popular they aren’t at the forefront. Sometimes, taking that extra second to check what’s available can improve your diet and ultimately, your wellbeing.

If you aren’t sure, ask!

Many dining halls and restaurants have healthier options in a separate section, or even off the menu. At your eatery of choice, a meal can be made much healthier with minor changes and omissions. Leaving the nacho cheese sauce off of your burrito and switching from a side of fries to a side of veggies can make a complete difference, with health benefits!

Try out some simple recipes in your dorm, apartment, or home!

Overnight oatmeal is so simple, you only need three base ingredients: any type of milk or yogurt (I prefer almond milk), rolled oats, and a sweetener of your choice (I use honey). Once you have your base, add any toppings you desire. To enhance the health factor, I like to add favorites such as fresh berries, a mashed banana, chia seeds, and mixed nuts. Stick your ingredients of choice in a mason jar or other container, and place it in the refrigerator before you go to bed. The next morning you have a delicious, nutritious breakfast. This dish is customizable to nearly any diet, including gluten-free and vegan!

Not very fond of oatmeal? Explore recipes on Pinterest, there are endless quick healthy ideas for busy college students. Don’t be afraid to try new things.

Explore off-campus options as well!

If you’re in the Montclair area, from uptown to downtown there are plenty of healthy options. With endless cafes, sandwich shops, fresh markets, ethnic foods, and other great restaurants, Montclair State is surrounded by a hub of some of the best quality cuisine around. Choices range from artisan goodies at Montclair Bread Company to delicious brunch at The Corner to other great spots like Toast, Ah’ Pizz, Raymond’s, Whole Foods… seriously the list goes on. Ask around, explore, and check it out!

Don’t forget to exercise.

If you haven’t already, try a range of exercises to find what you enjoy. Hate running? Try pilates. Need more excitement? Check your area for Zumba classes. Go for a hike. Try out a rock climbing gym. Embrace whatever it takes to get you up and moving. MSU’s Recreation Center has monthly classes and activities as well, a great free perk for students!

Finally, keep in mind that health is the combination of all your day to day choices. Eating right and exercising may be obvious, but things such as getting a good night’s sleep is also really important. Make changes little by little, and watch them add up to a healthier, happier you!
