Avoiding FOMO With Self Care

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) is a real thing. And it can be a real harmful thing. Do you ever yearn for a self-care night but know that you will only obsess over what fun things you could be doing instead? Are all of your friends going to a party while you are in your dorm room sick with a nasty cold? With the rise of Snapchat, Instagram, and House party, FOMO has become a real problem. College students are missing out on real, quality, and necessary self-care time because of the pressure social media inflicts on us to always be doing something fun and exciting. Our bodies require some chill time in order to function optimally, and we are simply draining it to the max when we study all week and socialize all weekend. With regards to social media, sometimes ignorance is bliss, so next time you decide to take a night to yourself consider leaving your snapchats unopened. Here are some awesome ways to take a self-care night, while filling the abundance of time you now have in place of checking your Insta notifications every 5 seconds:

  1. Face masks are back in style, and will always be the best way to look like a mud monster

  2. Start a “Higher Self” journal in which you visualize the best possible version of yourself and write what you picture (If you do this regularly, you will start to become your higher self)

  3. Do a yoga video on Youtube

  4. Watch stand up comedy on Netflix (laughing triggers endorphins)

  5. Paint your nails a happy color

  6. Watch a guilty pleasure TV show

  7. Watch Youtube videos to learn how to knit

  8. Create a “self-care playlist” to zone out to

  9. Read a funny book (Recommend Amy Schumer’s The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo)

  10. Have a heart to heart with a close friend (I recommend the elevator for deep conversations)

  11. Have a “massage party” where you and your friends alternate giving each other shoulder massages

  12. Create a motivating pinterest board

The moral of the story is that it is okay and even advisable to take a self care night on the regular in order to re-juvinate your mind and body. Don’t let social pressures detract from the importance of taking care of yourself.
