An Open Letter to the Girl Who is Trying to Let Go

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

Letting go of the past is a difficult thing to do. Because at one point that was your life. Maybe you had a rough break-up, maybe someone close to you passed away, maybe you had some family issues, or maybe you were just trying to accept yourself. Maybe it took a few months or it’s been an ongoing struggle for years. Whatever the case may be, it’s been hard to overcome. It’s been difficult to let go and not wonder why things happen the way they did. All of those tragedies, heartache, tears, sleepless nights and depression that crept in, made you feel numb, confused and lost, those moments were unbearable at times.

I still have moments where something or someone reminds me of a past event. Once this happens you just want to dwell on it. Wishing you could have changed something, wishing things were different. You look back at old photographs, hoping things were like they used to be. But things happen and unfortunate circumstances take place. Changes are lost, there’s nothing you can take back. So, what else is there to do? Move on. Keep going. Let go.

Easier said than done, that’s for sure. Even though living in the past can be an easy thing to do, choosing to can prevent you from a life filled with success, passion, love and happiness. Letting go may be difficult, but constantly living in the past brings fear, sadness and anxiety.  Instead of enjoying and living in the moment, taking one day at a time, you’re thinking about the past.

Don’t do this. It’s not worth it. Over the years I’ve taken too much time out of my present life by thinking about the past. The times I’ve done this, it hasn’t gotten me anywhere. It just brought another state of pain and sorrow, bringing back memories I didn’t want to visit again. Of course letting go takes time and effort, I’m still working on it too, but once you do, burdens are lifted off your shoulders, making room for enlightenment and freedom. Letting go lets you change parts of your life now and focus on the aspects that are currently there. When you let go you have to tell yourself that past events will no longer bring you down, if anything letting go will make you stronger. As cliché as it is, no one can change the past but they can change what lies ahead. By letting go, you are giving yourself the opportunity to embrace life once again, but with a positive mindset. So let go, start over and embrace the adventures awaiting you.
