10 foods you didn’t realise were vegan

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bristol chapter.

These foods should all be available in supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose, along with corner shops. Please make sure to read the ingredients of these foods before purchasing since they are always subject to change.

1. Oreo’s

Seems pretty shocking, doesn’t it? Considering this is supposed to be a chocolate cookie and cream biscuit, the ingredients do not actually contain any milk or egg. This is a lucky find for the vegans considering it’s hard to quench the desire for a nice choco biscuit without eating milk at the same time. It’s cheaper than buying ‘free from’ biscuits, and available in all supermarkets!

2. More Biscuits

So you’re not a huge fan of oreos, or you’re getting sick of them? Not to be disheartened, there are a few more gems of biscuits that do not contain animal products. These include Party Rings, Chocolate chip Hobnobs, Bourbons and lastly McVite’s ginger nut biscuits.

3. Sainbury’s Instant Chicken Noodles

Don’t be deceived by the name, since this pack of noodles is in fact completely animal product free. Sainsbury’s is secretly trying to wean us off animal products, but it is not uncommon to find that instant noodles are often vegan (whether it clearly labels it or not).

4. Biscoff Spread

Are you missing nutella, or just any sugary type of spread to eat in big spoonfuls? Don’t worry, Lotus/ Biscoff spread is 100% vegan. If you haven’t tried it before, you’re missing out on a mouth orgasm. Furthermore, if you haven’t figured it out yet, Lotus biscuits are indeed also vegan.

5. Instant Cake Mix (Betty Crocker)

Many instant cake mixes don’t actually contain eggs or dairy, therefore when it’s time to add the milk and eggs, you can just substitute it for vegan alternatives.

6. Co op desert

Never have I loved co op as much as I did when trying to ditch milk and eggs out of my diet. Co op offer jam and custard donuts, and also sell Bramley apple pies, and it turns out that these delicious deserts are all vegan. Serve up a slice of the apple pie with some vegan ice cream and you’ll be in heaven.

7. Instant Hot Chocolate

It’s getting cold, and some of you may just want to have a break from tea with oat milk, or plain peppermint tea. Instead, help yourself to some instant hot chocolate powder (nesquik, cadbury, freddo) that does not contain any milk. You can mix it with a plant based milk, or just use hot water. Top it off with veggie marshmallows from Holland&Barrett and you’re good to go.

8. Meat Flavoured Crisps

So, you’re missing the taste of meat slightly, or you just want a BBQ taste in your mouth. Don’t worry, just help yourself to some crisps. There are so many that are actually vegan despite seeming as though they may not be. Here are just a few:

Walkers prawn cocktail

McCoys BBQ Chicken

BBQ and Smokey Bacon Pringles

Tyrells English Barbecue

9. Sweets

Gelatine is a b***h when it comes to sweets. Luckily, Love Hearts, Starbursts, Skittles and several more sweets are all vegan.

10. Bisto Gravy

Once again, what is one to do without a nice bit of gravy on some roast vegetables when it comes to the cold winter season? Well, as a vegan you can still indulge in gravy. Just pick up Bisto gravy granules, and you’re good to go. It tastes great, and is cruelty free!
