Size Doesn’t Matter: Love Your Body

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ODU chapter.

Some women are curvier. Some women are thinner. Some women have larger breasts. Some women have smaller breasts. But guess what? None of that matters.

That’s right. The size of your body doesn’t matter at all. You do not have to look like your favorite celebrity to be beautiful. You know why? Because you’re just as beautiful as your favorite celebrity already, even if you don’t look exactly like them. Your favorite celebrity may have larger breasts and a curvier body, and you may have smaller breasts and not as many curves. That’s okay because you and that celebrity are beautiful regardless of how your body looks.

Society has an unrealistic expectation of how women should look. We look like the models we see in magazines or on TV. Not all women can realistically look like that though. Some women are naturally larger and no matter how much dieting and exercise they do, their bodies just cannot meet those expectations, and that’s okay. Some women are naturally thinner and no matter how much they eat, they just don’t gain weight, and that’s okay too.

If you do want to change your appearance up, that’s fine too. There’s nothing wrong with exercise and changing your appearance as long as it’s for you. Don’t start working out to change your body for your boyfriend or girlfriend. Change it for yourself. If you’ve got some arm flab you want to get rid of or you want some more muscle, then change it, but do it for yourself. Don’t do it because you’re trying to impress someone. If they’re truly worth your time, they’ll love you and your body just as it is, and they’ll continue to love you and your body if you ever opt to make any changes to it.

If you do want to diet and exercise to lose some weight or tone your body up, do it for yourself, but also don’t push yourself to do it. If you’ve been the kind of girl who hasn’t really exercised before and wants to get started, running around the block every day probably isn’t going to be the best plan of action right off the bat. Start by walking around the block a couple times a week before you start running. Pace yourself if you do want to start dieting and exercising, and if your body’s telling you to stop, listen to it.

But whether you’re a size 16 in jeans or a size 5, you are beautiful. The imperfections of your body are beautiful. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, and if someone tells you otherwise, don’t listen to them. You can cover pimples up with makeup or hide your imperfections all you want, but the truth of the matter is, it’s okay to not have what society considers a perfect body. If you do, that’s great, but if you don’t, that’s okay too. And if someone tells you to change a certain part of your body, don’t do it for them. If you want to do it, do it because you want to do it. Love your body as it is now because it’s already beautiful.
