5 Ways to Stay Safe This Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Susqu chapter.

Halloween is just a few weeks away, and you’ve most likely already bought your Halloween costume or at least thought about buying it. You and friends have probably been talking about Halloween weekend for weeks now and there’s no doubt that you might have mapped out the night in hopes of following it to the T. Some ideas might include getting ready together-helping each other out with hair and makeup; or even curating a playlist for the night before heading out to Trax or the bar (if you’re 21 or older). When the day actually comes things might not go as planned which is normal, but you still decide to have fun. You have so much fun that the least of your worries is your safety and the safety of others, so to avoid any of that I’ve come up with five things to do to have the best Halloween weekend ever!

1. Go out as a pack

You might recall your mom saying this, but no worries I’ll remind you. SU might be a small campus, but that doesn’t exclude it from having bad things happen on it. Don’t ever walk alone Halloween weekend, or any weekend. Always have a friend walk you wherever you need to go because you just never know what could happen.

2. Don’t drink anything that you haven’t poured out yourself

Trust no one, you never know what someone’s intentions are, and always carry a bottle of water with you!

3. Don’t eat any homemade treats

Brownies and cookies might seem harmless, but something may have been added to them without you being aware. Especially if you have a food allergy, steer away from these, please.

4. Make sure your costume is comfortable

The most annoying thing is when you have a costume that you’re constantly adjusting throughout the night. Heels are cute for the picture, but can you handle standing/dancing/walking in heels for 4+ hours, or wearing a full body costume that makes you sweat profusely.

5. Use pepper spray if you absolutely have to

If you do find yourself alone or with people you don’t know have your pepper spray handy in case something goes down. Don’t be afraid to use it if you really have to!
