Beating The Sun: Benefits of Waking Up Early

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cincinnati chapter.

No one likes the sound of their alarm. It reminds people that you have to leave your bed, AKA the comfiest place in the world, and face reality. I don’t know anyone that enjoys that besides me. Yes, I am a 19-year-old college student that truly embraces the sound torture of my alarm. Crazy, right? If someone told me about how I would be jumping out of bed before 6 a.m. at least five days a week last year, I would assume that person confused me with some type of sadist. But believe it or not, I am that person! But it isn’t all bad. In fact, there are multiple benefits to beating the sun! Here are a few:

You can take your time

  • Whether you’re waking up early before work or class, there’s no need to rush for these commitments. When you wake up early before them, you are able to take your time and get organized. You are not scrambling to pick an outfit, skipping breakfast, and most likely forgetting something.

  • When you are able to take your time in an early morning routine, you are able to truly appreciate your surroundings in peace. I live in an extremely chaotic and loud house, so when I am able to go through my morning routines with little to no noise, I am truly relaxed and content. And although it sounds cheesy, when you wake up early, you’re blessed to see every sunrise (weather may vary)!

Getting active

  • With having extra time in the morning, you are able to use that time to exercise, if you choose to! Typically, I go to the gym at 6 a.m. about three times a week, and I absolutely love it. Yes, the first few minutes of waking up are absolute torture, but once my workout is complete, I feel like a new person! An early morning workout is also great because it tends to be the emptiest hours of gyms. Lastly, if you have absolutely no time any other time of the day, this is the perfect time because I highly doubt none of y’all have plans at 6 a.m.

There’s less traffic

  • Obviously when you’re up before the cock crows, the highway seems to be deserted with only a few cars and semis. When waking up early, there’s no need to stress to make anything on time! If anything, you’ll arrive early and well-prepared!

Productivity

  • For most people, the mornings are the beginning of someone’s day. When you start your morning on a productive note, you are most likely to keep that productivity going throughout your day. It always feels great when it’s only 9 a.m., and I have already worked out, showered, cleaned my room, and finish an assignment.

Better grades

  • In a study done at a Texas university, those who rose earlier tended to have a higher GPA than those who do not. This is most likely because those who rise early tend to have an organized morning routine rather than staying up late the night before and rolling out of bed the next morning.

Overall, waking up early provides many positives to not only your grades and commute time, but there are many studies showing improvement on both mental and physical health due to an early morning routine! I admit, can be dreadful. But once you embrace those positives, there’s nothing stopping you!
