Vermont is well known for its hiking and outdoor culture, thanks to the fact that 78% of the state is forested. The expansive nature lends well to dog-friendly trekking, with plenty of trails for you and your four-legged friend to enjoy.
Colchester Pond – Colchester, VT
This is a loop trail that goes around the pond for about 3 miles that features a lake and is good for all skill levels.
Ethan Allen Park – Burlington, VT
This park features acres of natural woodland and the city’s highest point topped by a 40’ stone tower that provides commanding views of the city, Lake Champlain, the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks. Access via North Avenue, Ethan Allen Boulevard, and the 127 Bike Path across the Bridge.
Macrae Farm – Colchester, VT
Macrae is a short trail that leads to many different fields, full of room for your furry friend to go crazy in. A river flows through Macrae farm, ideal for cooling off in hot summer months.
Mt. Philo – Charlotte, VT
This is Vermont’s oldest state park, created in 1924. The mountaintop picnic area offers spectacular views of the lake, valley, and mountains to the west. Hiking trails lead from the summit to the base.
Stowe Pinnacle Trail – CC Putnam State Forest
This short but sweet hike is a perfect balance between not too easy and not too difficult. The highlights for most hikers are Samson and Baylor, two friendly golden retrievers who live at the base of the trail. The goldens tend to join you on your way to the top so if you can’t bring your own dog on this trip, chances are you can borrow some here! After the dogs, the views steal the show. Many trekkers bring their dogs on this trail, so keep that in mind when visiting.
Sterling Pond Trail – Smugglers’ Notch State Park
This is a short 2.3 mile trail that starts off with a steep ascent before progressing into undulating terrain. Start early for a better chance of having the trail to yourself, but more importantly, to see the pond in its most tranquil state
Texas Falls Recreation Area
This short hike is for the waterfall lovers. Texas Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Vermont. The creek plunges deep into carved rocks for a dramatic scene that can be viewed from several bridges and observation areas.
All these hikes are fan favorites and bring in lots of foot traffic during the warmer months. Please be sure to adhere to signs posted about safety precautions.
