2020 has not been most peoples year, and it definitely hasn’t been mine! Between the stress of navigating school online, having many events canceled, health complications, some tough lessons learned, and the stress of figuring out all there is to learn in your twenties… all on top of a global pandemic has not been necessarily easy! However, there is comfort in knowing I’m not the only one feeling this way, and I wanted to share some habits I have cultivated throughout this year that have helped.

Surround yourself with good!!

Whether it’s friends, family, significant others, social media followers or content…if they are weighing you down mentally, or negatively impacting you, it’s time to cut some ties! You are who and what you surround yourself with, and this year has taught me that there is so much peace in unfollowing social media accounts that no longer serve you a purpose and investing time in people who make you feel like your best self.

Take time for yourself

This year has also taught me that self care should always be a top priority, and that it can come in many different forms. Sometimes putting on a face mask and taking a bubble bath doesn’t fix all our problems (but it does help!) Finding your own outlets and creating a routine that makes you feel good, whether it’s going for walks with friends or family, working out, talking to someone about your problems, writing.. whatever it may be, make sure to find time to make yourself a priority!

Do something new (even if it scares you)

Getting creative and adjusting to a new idea of fun has also been a huge part of this year, especially for college students. It is very easy to get stuck in a mundane routine at school with classes being online. Finding ways to keep things interesting, even if it’s small things like cooking new meals, finding a show to watch with your roommates, or having (pandemic approved) nights with friends to look forward to.. my roommates and I are currently loving wine Wednesday and  Saturday brunch with the girls!

Be kind to others (and yourself)

In a time of a lot of controversy, disagreements, and (too much) ignorance on social media it’s apparent that there is a lack of empathy and kindness among each other. Everyone is going through it this year, and taking a step back to realize that everyone is dealing with their own stuff, having patience, and being a little extra kinder than you need to be goes a long way. Along with also realizing that we’re all doing the best we can, give credit to yourself and remember that the way you speak to yourself matters the most.

Take advantage of the sunshine

It has been easy this year to get stuck inside all day with so many places being closed, work and school being remote, and taking health precautions. On top of that winter is coming fast and I know a lot of people are worried about how the darker, dreary weather will affect their mental health on top of a pandemic. Making time for breaks to get fresh air, taking advantage of the warmer days, and getting outside when I can has helped significantly during online schooling.

This year has taught me a lot about being mindful of the habits you create, the people you invest time in, and finding light in little things. If no one has told recently, or you haven’t told yourself, be proud of all you’re doing and how far you’ve come during this flaming garbage pile of a year!
