As this unprecedented school year began, I started feeling unconfident and out-of-touch with myself. Between online classes and being away from home, I felt isolated from my community, and thus, noticed that my mental health was suffering. Living during a pandemic is difficult. Trying to be a student while also needing to be very cautious about health can create feelings of loneliness. I noticed that the combination of all these factors started to make my mental health deteriorate a bit.

While scrolling through Tik Tok one night, I came across a method of reassurance called affirmations. This is a concept where reciting positive statements daily helps you stay positive and attracts good energies. I was certainly skeptical at first, but I had nothing to lose, so I copied down some of my favorite affirmations and recited them first thing in the morning and last thing before going to sleep. The change in my self-confidence and positivity is astronomical. I have found that in the past few weeks since I started this practice, I have begun to truly believe and embody these affirmations. This practice is very empowering as I began to realize that negative thoughts and emotions can have a big impact on my life.

You can use any statement that you think is important, but here are a few that I used:

I attract good energy and positivity

This is a great one to use if you are hoping to attract good friendships. After using this one for a few days, I noticed that my roommates and I began getting along very well!

I radiate self-confidence, power, and kindness that others find irresistible

This is a great one to use if you want other people to see you as more attractive. It is supposed to make people drawn to you and see you in a beautiful and strong light.

My life is just beginning

It is easy to get into a rut and feel uninspired, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Remembering that you have your entire life in front of you is important.

I am intelligent and successful

This one I began using in hopes of feeling more confident when completing schoolwork and thinking about my future career. After a few days of saying this, I began to truly believe it and believe in myself. I began to apply for more internships with confidence.

I am healthy and strong

Obviously, it is very important to follow the regulations of the CDC and take necessary precautions to avoid COVID-19. However, it is very easy to get worried and start imagining symptoms. It is important to remind yourself that you are healthy, strong, and feel grateful for your health.

I hope that these can help you as much as they helped me. Say these with conviction and confidence, then you will notice a change in the way you see the world– and more importantly, yourself.
