There has been a lot of interest in therapy in the last couple of years. Everyone has their own baggage to carry, and some people go to therapy for it. However, therapy is a thing we do not talk about. Like ever. Therapy is a place where you explore who you are. If you have not gone to therapy, here are some things to consider.
1. Sitting in Discomfort
Therapy is going to be uncomfortable. You are going to be looking in the mirror…a lot. You may want to consider how willing you are to reflect on yourself. Think about it. You are on a journey to explore who you are as a human, and it is not an easy one. Though you may be uncomfortable, it will not last forever. You learn to be comfortable with working through your discomfort.
2. You and The Therapist
Fit is very important. Imagine driving in a car for six hours with someone you struggle with. That would be a miserable ride. You would not want to do that with therapy. It is important on considering how you and the therapist get along. What kind of therapist do you want? Directive and blunt? Affirming and gentle? A combination of all these. The choice is yours.
3. Bills, Bills, Bills
Consider the fees on the services you receive. If you have insurance, then this may not be a problem. However, if you do not have insurance, you may consider seeing services that operate on a sliding scale. If you are a university student, counseling services may be built into your student fees.
4. No Problem? No Problem.
Typically, people arrive at therapy with some concern. However, this is not always the case. Everything can be going great, and you can still go to therapy. There is no hard and fast rule that you have to have a problem to go therapy. You can go for personal growth and deepen an understanding of yourself. It is up to you.
Therapy can be a powerful experience, and it is important to consider it. Therapy can be scary, but that does not mean it has to be. You get to explore your baggage with another human who is willing to be there on your journey. Why not try it?
