4 Ways to De-stress This Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIT chapter.

We all experience stress at times; whether it be due to school, relationships, or even finances. When it arises, it’s important to take a step back and evaluate the situation. Other times, it’s more beneficial to do an activity that takes your mind off what’s stressing you out. Here’s four simple ways to de-stress at home.

1. Read a book.

Reading has been associated with decreasing blood pressure, lowering your heart rate, and reducing stress. A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that stress is reduced up to 68% just by reading. Two books I’ve enjoyed reading recently are You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero and The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.

2. Make a collage.

Collages are a fun and creative way to distract yourself. You can cut up magazines and newspapers that are lying around, or Photoshop to compile your favorite Pinterest boards on to one image. You can stick to a theme through colors or patterns, or mix and match to create your own piece.

3. Take a shower.

For most of us, showering is part of our daily routine. But did you know that it affects your mood? Researchers at Harvard University have found that showering in the morning is best for those who are stressed at work or are feeling under pressure to be creative. Next time you’re feeling stressed before a long day of class or work, try taking a shower. Bonus points if you add a few drops of an essential oil like eucalyptus or lavender.

4. Drink green tea.

Green tea contains L-theanine which is an amino acid that promotes relaxation and gives the tea its flavor. Researchers have found that drinking tea lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The process of boiling the water, steeping your tea bag, and adding sugar can also help to distract from the pressures that are present in your life.
