As a college student, I have had to walk A LOT. The journey to get to my classes usually involves a blister or two, some music in my headphones, and the constant dodging of electric scooters. But all that being said, I really do like a good stroll, especially when there is no rush. Not only is the exercise great for the body, but it gives me some time to slow down and take in my surroundings at an unhurried pace. So as the weather (gradually) begins to cool, I am going to try to keep going on walks as much as I can, whether there is a destination in mind or not. Here are some of the steps I’m taking to have the best walk that you can:
- The Time of Day– I usually like to time my walks around sunset (which I have coined as my “sunset walks” ) since the weather is not as hot as midday andddd who doesn’t want to see a sunset? But if you are an early bird, I also recommend walking before it gets too hot, maybe even during the sunrise. BUT FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY PLEASEE DO NOT WALK AROUND AT NIGHT NO MATTER HOW PRETTY IT IS
- The Setting– I like to walk in places that have low-medium activity, meaning that the volume is not too loud, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be pitch silent either. This place can be your college campus or even a local park. Just always be sure to stay cautious of your surroundings and any events that may be going on in the area at that time. But at the same time, don’t be afraid to explore a new area through your walk :)
- The Activity– Though I do tend to listen to music or podcasts on my walks, there are plenty of other ways you can spend your walk. Sometimes I like to walk in silence so I can be aware of what is going on around me AND in my head. Other times, I like to intentionally listen to new albums or audiobooks. I even like to invite other people on my walks as a way to catch up with them, or if I cannot physically walk with them, I just use my walk as an excuse to have a long call with them. But overall, what you do on your walk is totally up to you ;)
But whether you are walking to improve your physical or mental health, I think that this activity overall has benefits for every type of person. Personally, I have seen the benefits of intentional walks in my own life, both physically and mentally, to the point where I look forward to my “sunset walks.” And thankfully, I have gotten to a point where those effects are not the end goal, but a mere benefit. Now, I look forward to walking just for the sake of walking! So even if you are not consistent at first, don’t be afraid to go on that first walk, because who knows how many more walks that could lead to? After all, hot girl walks were popular for a reason, right?
