Birthdays on a Budget: 4 Creative Gift Ideas Under $25

If your fall reset is anything like mine, trying to be more fiscally responsible is a top priority. It can feel impossible to keep up with birthday functions without overspending on the go-to gifts. And let’s face it, sometimes you’re in that weird in-between spot where you just don’t know exactly what to get someone.

For a suitemate you hardly see, or a friend-of-a-friend, a gift card may suffice, but it can feel awkward giving your close friends the same thing as everyone else. But it’s possible to show that you really care without neglecting your budget. For the girls who want to give a creative gift, here are some gift ideas with character that won’t break the bank!

A Book

For book lovers, there’s no better way to show that you care about their interests. Even if your birthday girl isn’t the biggest reader, picking out something for her coffee table or for an upcoming trip shows that same effort.

For maximum savings, I would check eBay and filter for brand new books; they’re usually cheaper than the same thing straight from a retailer. Depending on the price of the book, you may have the wiggle room to build an annotation kit while keeping it under budget. Adding a few pastel-hued highlighters, sticky tabs, and glittery Post-it Notes is an easy way to add a unique spin on this classic gift.

A Bedazzled Drink

A hill I will die on: the whimsy era is not over! This sweet gift is easy and fun, and in my opinion, perfect for a roomie or suitemate to brighten their birthday right at the beginning. It consists of the birthday girl’s favorite coffee, matcha, or dirty soda (preferably with cold foam to mimic cake icing), a candle, sprinkles, and either gemstones or a ribbon to decorate the outside of the cup.

One tip that I would keep in mind is to bedazzle or decorate the cup before ordering and ask the barista to use it to save time. There’s something to be said for a gift that’s also an experience!

A Playlist

The ultimate budget-friendly gift is a personalized playlist! There’s no better way to show that you know the birthday girl and what she likes. What I love about this gift is that apart from being personal and free, it can act as a fun add-on to another item. My personal favorite pairing is the patterned wired headphones from TikTok Shop and a playlist with a matching cover!

The Split-Gift

Okay, this one may bend the rules a bit, but never underestimate the power of a joint effort! Anything is within budget if split with the right number of people, and knowing that everyone took the time to coordinate may mean more to the birthday girl than the gift itself.

I suggest practical but fun staples such as Longchamp bags, digital cameras, a month of gym or Pilates memberships, or a nice pair of shoes split several ways. The effort and usefulness are there, and it ensures that the birthday girl is getting something nice that she may not want to buy for herself! Bonus points if it’s something thoughtful and specific — my friends did this for a friend who’s planning to rush a business fraternity and got her a high-end blazer.

Ultimately, what I love about these options is that each one shows thought and creativity while still being accessible and affordable. A well-chosen and personalized gift will be remembered for years to come, and if you can achieve that on a budget, it’s a win-win that makes the gifting process stress-free and rewarding for everyone.
