Is it bad to admit that I love Love Island? I can’t get enough of the relationship drama, sisterhood in action, and the nasty aftermath of each season. My first season of Love Island USA was season 6 in 2024, and I simply could not get enough of it. With the admitted dumpster fire that was season 7 the following year, and the consistently growing fanbase who wished to interact, the producers aimed to find singles who were a little more grounded. Now, after watching the reunion, that does not really seem like the case. What are the morals the casting agents are looking for, and why do we keep creating a misstep in the process?
Initial Perception of Islanders
The expectations for season 8 were high by default. Season 7 was an absolute nightmare to be a part of, and even just to watch it was mentally draining. But when 2025 shifted into 2026, we wanted something new. The cast entered our screens on June 2nd light of two people: Vasana Montgomery, who was removed before the first episode due to racist videos resurfacing, and Gabriel Vasconcelos was introduced in the first episode as a bombshell.
The fans had favorites almost instantly, naming a group of three OG members (Trinity Tatum, Aniya Harvey, Melanie Moreno) and a day 2 bombshell (Kayda Bosse) the “core 4”. These girls and whatever guys they were with were instantly adored. Other popular cast members included:
- Kenzie Annis (known for her bubbly personality, blonde bangs, and the infamous “Clam Slam” splits she did periodically throughout the season)
- Corbin Mims (his robotic way of writing and deep, monotone voice gave him the nickname “Corbin GPT,” inspired by AI platform ChatGPT)
- Jennifer Terry (Day 7 bombshell who did little to nothing to shake up the current couples; she was called a “nothing burger” online. She later grew a fanbase praising her anti-men jokes, and the name was switched to “everything bagel”)
- Caleb McDaniel (Day 7 bombshell with Jen and Sol Dean. Known as the sweet country boy who stayed loyal to Kenzie and later coupled up with Casa girl, Jaiden Bacciocco, once realizing the two weren’t going to work out)
- KC Chandler and Tierra Davis (KC was initially coupled up with Aniya for over half of the season’s episodes. He would criticize her desire not to be intimate early on to the guys, calling her “grandma” for wanting to take it slow. Tierra was a girl in Casa Amor who KC coupled up with, leaving Aniya single and vulnerable. She is known as TiTi, and her hilarious argument with Trinity once they returned to the villa: “Pipe down, I’m TiTi!”)
With all of these diverse personalities in one villa in Fiji, this cast was instantly loved (with a few bad apples in the mix). One thing that is important to note is that the Core 4 couples all placed in the final four. The rankings went like this:
1st: Trinity Tatum and Bryce Alakai
2nd: Aniya Harvey and Carl Lee Schmidt
3rd: Melanie Moreno and Sincere Rhea
4th: Kayda Bosse and Zach Georgiou
The Shift Outside the Villa
Outside of the villa, the well-loved cast members were bombarded with love and brand deals. Trinity is verified with 3.6 million followers and only had around 5,000 before the show aired. Bryce released his DJ remix of Ty Dolla Sign’s “Blasé” and performed shows with Ty next to him.
An interesting turn of brand deals for a castmate was for Melanie. She had potentially hundreds of brands’ social media accounts making posts about how they would be giving her free things and discounts if she would leave Sincere, the guy she spent the majority of the show crying over and struggling to trust. The result? She didn’t and still defends him to this day. Even after her mother and sister tried to convince her that they’re not good together on multiple occasions during and after the show.
More issues began to sprout when many of the cast members were rumored to be supporters of Donald Trump. They are allowed to have their own opinions, and nothing is wrong with people thinking differently, but it does make them look really bad on a show that praises the contestants for being diverse, progressive, and well-versed on social issues. Kenzie Annis and Jennifer Terry denied the claims, yet the latter did not explain further.
Love Island S8 Reunion debacle
Premiering on August 31st, the reunion was definitely anticipated. Potential drama between Kenzie and Melanie, updates from estranged couples, Sincere’s family making offensive remarks on a TikTok live about Aniya, and Sol choosing to show up after being positive she wasn’t going to go.
So basically, my main issue with this reunion was not the catching up with each of the main islanders; it wasn’t with Ariana Madix or Andy Cohen, and it definitely wasn’t everyone apologizing for past actions. It was over an hour in when Caleb and Jaiden discussed what had happened with their relationship after the show.
The two got very detailed about what happened after their dumping in episode 25 and made the whole atmosphere very uncomfortable. I hadn’t felt this awkward the entire show, and here I was hearing people who were on a show I liked talking about intimate details in front of a live audience. It appeared as if Jaiden was far more invested in the relationship compared to Caleb, while he was reaping the benefits of being one of the show’s biggest heartthrobs. But then Kayda says a one-off comment that was easy to miss: “Why didn’t you keep your legs closed?”
A girl who was a part of the season’s main girl group thought it was a good idea to bash another girl for staying with a guy when her situation is painted as relatively the same. The same group had a toxic relationship that has been supported by her friends the whole time. Isn’t that hypocritical? Did that really need to be said? In my humble opinion, this one comment proved to me that the frame of calm and sisterhood was selective and for the Core 4 only.
Conclusion
So, is season 9 even worth making anymore? Have we seen too many of the former cast members struggle with the societal pressures placed upon them and need to cut back? Knowing the past few seasons, Love Island will not be slowing down any time soon, and the ridiculous nature will resume until the cracks in the foundation become too big to hide.
