It’s official: Love Island USA’s season finale aired Sunday, June 12th, marking the conclusion of the reality show’s eighth season! For those who are not caught up, Love Island is a reality dating show where you can apply to enter a secluded villa in Fiji, surrounded by only your fellow islanders, producers, and the iconic host Ariana Madix for six weeks of the summer. The goal of this show is to ultimately find love with a fellow islander, but other incentives including a financial reward, strong friendships, crazy couples’ challenges, and guaranteed drama is what makes the show a once in a lifetime experience for both the contestants in the villa, and an addictive watch for viewers all over the world.

The Og Islanders

Kicking off the season premiere, ten islanders arrived on day one, an even split between 5 women and 5 men. Aniya Harvey and Kenzie Annis walked in first, with Beatriz Hatz, Trinity Tatum, and Melanie Moreno following suit, getting to know each other and host Ariana before the men entered the villa. Soon after the girls settled in, Sean Reifel, Bryce Detloff, Zach Georgiou, KC Chandler, and Sincere Rhea walked in to jumpstart the season of making connections and finding love.

Host Arianna Madix wasted no time in getting the contestants coupled up right away, with the first challenge of the season consisting of the islanders being split into groups based on gender, and blindly answering either/or questions divided by a set of doors. The islanders would then share a kiss with whoever was behind the door they chose, immediately testing out chemistry and potential sparks they had with each other.

The final question fell to the women to make the ultimate decision –who did they want to couple up with? After surprising snubs, heartwarming embraces, and tough decisions, the first couples of the season were Trinity and Bryce, Beatriz and Sean, KC and Aniya, Melanie and Sincere, and Kenzie and Zach.

Day 2: The bombshells

After a shaky first night for some couples, (Kenzie and Zach, Trinity and Bryce) the first bombshells of the season entered the villa during the first recoupling. Similar to night one, each couple was divided by a door, having to decide whether to stay within their current couple, or break off and try something different. On the women’s side, Trinity chose to break off from Bryce, while Beatriz surprisingly chose to break off from Sean. On the men’s side, Bryce also chose to break off from Trinity, while Zach chose to break from Kenzie.

In come the bombshells, immediate fan favorites Kayda Bosse and Gabriel Vasconcelos. Both the bombshells whisked away the islanders that chose to break off from their couple for a night in a separate villa location. Leaving the other islanders to find out the fate of their couple, Sean and Kenzie were left shocked and saddened by their new single status.

When the bombshells returned, they had the first pick in who they would like to couple up with, sealing their new relationship with a kiss. After dramatic pauses and fun music to build the suspense, Kayda chose to couple up with Zach, and Gabriel chose to couple up with Beatriz, leaving Bryce and Trinity both single. Since the pair were not picked by their respective bombshells, they remained in their original couple together, where they would only blossom into one of the greatest love stories Love Island has seen.

the first islander dumpings

After several days of islander chats, couples’ challenges, and the arrival of new and highly popular bombshell Corbin, a shaky recoupling ensued. Corbin entered the villa during a challenge, where he secretly shared a kiss with every girl after they completed their part of the challenge. Corbin’s arrival had several of the islanders giddy and excited for someone new to explore, specifically catching Kenzie’s eye. After what appeared to be a small spark with her fellow single islander Sean, she ended up wanting to pursue Corbin more. When the second recoupling occurred by the firepit, the girls had the decision on who they wanted to pick. Before Kenzie could choose between Corbin and Sean, it was revealed that as the new bombshell, Corbin would be able to pick who he’d like to couple up with. He ultimately chose Kenzie, leaving Sean single and hanging on by a thread. Trinity was the last to choose, and held the fate of either Sean or Bryce in her hands. She ended up picking to stick by Bryce, leaving Sean single, and the first islander to be dumped from the villa. Tears were shed, and many hugs were shared, but Sean left the villa with his head held high, and a smile on his face, quickly earning the respect and love from thousands of fans all across America. Even on limited time in the Villa, Sean remains a fan favorite from season 8.

triple threat

On Love Island, only a couple days can pass before more bombshells enter to shake things up. And on Lingerie night, not one, not two, but three new bombshells walked in during a slumber party challenge where every villa girl was blindfolded. Sol Mýa, and fan favorites Jen Terry, and Caleb McDaniel entered the villa, with both the new women sharing kisses with the islanders, and Caleb entering after the blindfolds were taken off. Immediately upon his entrance, he caught Kenzie’s eye, with multiple islanders and Kenzie herself saying that Caleb was her “ideal type on paper.”

When America had a chance to vote for who the new bombshells should couple up with, shocking pairs were revealed and another islander was dumped from the villa. Seeing that Melanie and Sincere’s relationship was rocky, fans voted to couple up Sol with Sincere, leaving Melanie single. Although Kenzie stated she wasn’t feeling much of a spark with Caleb, America voted to couple them up, leaving Corbin on his own. And most surprisingly, fans voted to couple Jen up with Gabriel, leaving Beatriz single. The decision once again fell into Corbin’s hands as he was the sole male islander left single. He chose to save Melanie and couple up with her, resulting in Beatriz being the first female islander dumped from the villa. Although sadness spread quickly throughout the villa, Beatriz left in high spirits, embracing the girls and host Ariana Maddix, and having a heartfelt conversation in Spanish with her former connection Gabriel.

CASA AMOR

The moment all viewers have been waiting for arrived: Casa Amor. This ultimate relationship test is where every male islander leaves the villa as a group and heads to Casa Amor, a separate villa where six new women would test their connections.

A jaw dropping twist occurred this season however, with the boys secretly leaving before the famous Heart Rate Challenge. With the Villa girls dressed up and ready to have a fun time, they hurried down to the main level of the villa, only to be presented with a giant gift box. Thinking the men were inside, the girls were giddy for the challenge to start, but instead of the men, the girls got a shocking surprise instead: a TV livestreaming the men in Casa Amor, where the new women entered and did the Heart Rate Challenge with the Villa boys. This twist caused some hell to break loose, but many fans believed it was something the Villa girls needed to see. Several of the men, including KC, Corbin, and Sincere were making distasteful comments towards their villa connection, and each Villa girl got to see it.

Kenzie was taken aback when Corbin agreed with KC that she was “thrown out the window” when the Casa girls arrived. Aniya was left speechless when she heard KC downplaying what she thought was a strong connection. The girls were left to sleep alone for the night, but had their experience flipped upside down when 12 new Casa men arrived for them to explore. The most notable men to come out of Casa were Carl Schmidt and Dylan Wrona. Carl and Aniya hit it off right away, and Kenzie stood on her word that she was done with Corbin, engaging in a connection with Dylan.

One of the sweetest moments from Casa wasn’t the new couples forming, it was actually the distance between Bryce and Trinity, making their connection grow even stronger. Both Bryce and Trinity were shown crying over each other during their confessionals, with Bryce capturing all of America’s heart when he stated that “The girls here are great…but it’s not her.” in reference to Trinity. This heartfelt confession had viewers feigning for Bryce and Trinity to be reunited, with some even making jokes that he might swim back to the island to be with her. Casa is a hardcore relationship test, the biggest test of Love Island, but Trinity and Bryce stayed true to each other, and their heartfelt reunion had teary-eyed viewers beaming at their screens.

a shocking switch up

One of the most surprising switch ups of this season however was when KC brought back Titi from Casa. Although Aniya had an amazing connection with Carl, she felt that the time spent with KC for the first consecutive weeks was too strong to break away from, and she decided to stay loyal to him. But she ended up being fiercely blindsided when KC came back in a separate couple, and fans along with Aniya were angered at the betrayal and shut out of her feelings that occurred. A heated argument ensued, and Aniya left the fire pit in tears, stating she, “should’ve kept Carl.” Luckily for Aniya, America had the option to vote to bring back two Casa Amor Islanders, and with the hold he had on America’s hearts, sweet Carl was brought right back to the villa, where he and Aniya gave their connection a second shot, and blossomed to the finale.

THE FINALE

All good things have to come to an end, and while season eight had many ups and downs, the final four couples of the season were Trinity and Bryce, Aniya and Carl, Kayda and Zach, and Melanie and Sincere. Each couple had a date outside of the villa before the upcoming finale. Kayda and Zach spent their day next to a lake, talking about life outside the villa, and ultimately placing 4th during the finale. Melanie and Sincere had their date out on the ocean, making pizzas together and discussing the ups and downs of their relationship. Their relationship was the rockiest of any in the villa, with many fights about Sincere’s dishonesty, Melanie firmly laying out her opinion on him after Casa, and even their families expressing concern about the health of their relationship. They placed 3rd in the finale, and while fans have mixed opinions on this pairing, life outside the villa will ultimately test if they are compatible.

Carl and Aniya had one of the two night time dates, where they dined in a magical, fairy-like setup that took audiences’ breath away. Aniya had stated from the beginning that she was in search of a fairy tale romance, and was brought to tears when she discovered that production had gifted her and Carl a fairy tale book of their journey together. Reading it with smiles on their faces and love in their eyes, Aniya and Carl solidified what many view as the second strongest connection from this season. The powerhouse couple placed 2nd in the finale, only runners up to the couple that went through it all: Bryce and Trinity.

Bryce and Trinity had the final date of the finale, a candlelit dinner where they reminisced about their time in the villa. Trinity stated that she wasn’t expecting to leave the villa with a boyfriend, but she couldn’t be happier at that moment. Bryce told her that there was no one he’d rather be sitting with, and that seeing their families bond so well only strengthened his feelings for her. In a teary-eyed, heartfelt confession, Bryce told Trinity that he loved her and vice versa, a major milestone to happen between couples on Love Island. The Day One couple placed 1st, becoming the winners of Love Island Season 8, and the recipients of the 100k prize. They two reveled in the moment, but quickly shared with Ariana that they already have plans to be with each other outside the villa. Fans across the country cheered for this moment, as the couple, labeled “Brinity”, had the support of millions since the very beginning.

While Love Island can be a stressful time of testing connections and experiencing heartbreak, the girlhood, friendships, and real love that was found on this season was a blessing to watch. Seeing the girls support and uplift each other all season long is an amazing sight for teenage girls to witness. This season was filled with funny moments, endless metaphors, drama, friendship, and deep connections. While not everyone found love, Love Island Season 8 produced strong bonds, resilient women, and representation of many backgrounds from all around the world.
