The ‘Off Campus’ Mutual Masturbation Scene Isn’t Just Hot — It’s Empowering

Content warning: This piece mentions sexual assault. If you’re anything like me (or, basically, the rest of the world at this point), then you probably haven’t stopped thinking about Off Campus. Between the steamy sex scenes and the undeniable chemistry between literally every single character, the Amazon Prime Video series has been living rent-free in my brain since its premiere in May 2026 — especially Garrett and Hannah’s mutual masturbation scene. Spoiler alert: Spoilers for Off Campus Season 1 follow.

ICYMI, Off Campus Season 1 follows the love story between Hannah, an introverted music student, and Garrett, a college hockey star. Naturally, what starts as a fake relationship quickly turns into something much more as the two (surprise!) end up falling for each other. As we watch their relationship blossom, we also see Hannah and Garrett explore their sexuality, eventually getting intimate (and refreshingly vulnerable) in the now iconic Episode 4 mutual masturbation scene.

In the episode, Hannah tells Garrett that she was sexually assaulted in high school, and that her trauma has made being sexually intimate with a partner difficult. Because of this, she has never been able to orgasm with a partner, and asks Garrett to give her one.

They make a plan to have sex, and when Hannah arrives, Garrett immediately creates a safe space for her: offering her more comfortable clothes and dancing in the room with her to break the tension. However, when the two start to hook up, Hannah gets triggered by her previous trauma and breaks down in front of Garrett. After this, Garrett suggests that the two mutually masturbate, giving Hannah control of her pleasure in a partnered setting. It’s intimate and hot, sure, but also empowering to see Hannah explore her sexuality in a comfortable and safe setting.

Safety was a huge factor when filming the scene IRL, too. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Belmont Cameli, who plays Garrett in the show, opened up about filming the scene with his costar Ella Bright (Hannah). “We had a lot of reverence for that scene, and we were really careful and intentional about it,” Cameli said. “We talked about it so many times before filming it.”

Bright also expressed to Entertainment Weekly that the scene was one of her favorites to film. “I think the trust between those characters and how comfortable they are with each other is so beautiful,” she said. “It is rare to see an intimate scene where the characters don’t touch.”

While Off Campus is full of great sex scenes, it’s incredibly refreshing to see sex scenes that are handled with intention and care. Because, sure — sex can be super hot! But, at the same time, it can also be vulnerable, intimate, and emotional. And, honestly, that makes things just that much better.
