As we were gearing up for Olivia Rodrigo’s anticipated third album, You Look So Pretty for a Girl So In Love, the lead single for the album called “Drop Dead” was also released. As we wait patiently for the full album, here are some of my predictions for this album, alongside a review of her newest song.
My Album Predictions.
- The album will take a route similar to Lover by Taylor Swift. At the beginning of the rollout, Olivia stated that the album was going to be one full of yearning and anxiety while still in love. In a similar manner to Taylor’s album Lover, we may see some songs like “The Archer.”
- It will be a pop rock genre. Olivia is definitely a rock girl, and I don’t see that changing for her future album. However, with the album color shifting to something lighter, her making the album a softer rock compared to her previous albums would be an interesting change.
- There will be a song with commentary about beauty standards. No Liv album is complete without commentary of the modern body image. To follow up on “Pretty isn’t Pretty” and “Jealousy, Jealousy,” a similar song that discusses how media exposure impacts will likely be on the album.
- There will be an additional single dropped in May. Because of the chronological nature of the album, this will likely be a track two drop. Since we already have the pre-meetup song, chances are that track two will be about meeting the subject of the song.
- One of the tracks will be called “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love.” This track will probably be the last track in order to wrap up the album completely. In a manner similar to “The Life of a Showgirl” by Taylor Swift, this could be a collaboration with an artist who is up and coming and who could fit the spot of Olivia in the music industry.
- There will be a surprise deluxe drop alongside another song that is different from the rest of the album. If the album ends with a song about how in love Olivia is, that would leave room for her to make a surprise album about how truly heart breaking it can be to leave someone who you are so in love with. Alternatively, she could also drop another song that does not completely align with her exact vision of the album, but is similar enough to be added as an extension, like “Jigsaw” and “Holidays” by Conan Gray or “Such a Funny Way” by Sabrina Carpenter.
My “Drop Dead” Review.
For the first track to be released for an album, “Drop Dead” was the perfect choice. While it does diverge from Olivia’s pattern of a track three release for the lead single, “Drop Dead” perfectly encapsulates the yearning-yet-in-love aesthetic that the album is said to offer.
The soft rock beat makes it perfect for any internet stalking spree when you are bored in bed, but it’s still up beat enough that it would fit in the background of a bar. Lyrics such as “looking like an angel on the wall of Versailles” and “If you let me stay the night / Well I think I might just have to stay forever” add a background that not only shows how cultured Olivia is, but also how relatable she is for those in her peer group.
The three music videos also provide three different aesthetics to listen to the song. On Spotify, you can see a tour of all of Paris while watching Olivia sing about her newfound love. Apple Music puts you in a position of internet stalking where you float around a MacBook and see the behind the scenes of Olivia’s search. And the original video that you can find on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music allows you to watch Olivia dance around Versailles.
The original music video is actually a historical moment in the music industry, as “Drop Dead” is the first music video to be recorded in Versailles in nearly a decade. Not only does this allow for a gorgeous backdrop for the video, but it also shows how big Olivia has grown in the span of five years.
In all, our first look into You Look So Pretty for a Girl So In Love shows how good of an album it could be. As we close out Pisces season and get ready for Gemini season, I am sure that this album will be the album of the summer.
