Finals week always sounds manageable… until it actually happens.
Suddenly, everything hits at once. Exams, papers, projects and somehow you’re supposed to stay focused through all of it without completely losing your mind. It’s a lot, and I feel we all talk about how hard it can be, but sometimes we don’t share what can be super helpful.
I’ve definitely had my fair share of stressful finals weeks, and I’ve realized it’s not really about being perfect. It’s just about finding ways to get through it without burning out. Here are a few things that have actually helped me.
- Start a Little Earlier Than You Want To
-
I know this is the most basic advice, but it actually makes such a difference.
Even if it’s just lightly reviewing or looking over what you need to do, starting earlier helps you feel way less panicked later. You don’t have to go all in right away; just doing something small can help you feel more in control.
- Write Everything Down So It’s Not All In Your Head
-
When everything is just floating around in your mind, it feels 10 times more overwhelming.
I like to write out what I have, when it’s due and what needs the most attention. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just enough so you can actually see what you’re dealing with. Once it’s on paper, it feels a lot more manageable.
- Change Your Environment When You Feel Stuck
-
Staying in the same place all day can make you feel so unmotivated.
Even just moving to a different spot, going to the library or sitting somewhere new can help you reset a little. It doesn’t have to be a big change, just enough to get you out of that “I can’t focus” mindset.
- Take Breaks Without Feeling Guilty
-
This is something I’ve had to learn the hard way.
You’re not going to be productive if you’re forcing yourself to sit there for hours straight. Taking breaks doesn’t mean you’re being lazy; it actually helps you come back more focused.
Even if it’s just 15–20 minutes, it makes a difference.
- Actually Take Care Of Yourself
-
I feel like this is the first thing people ignore during finals.
Sleeping, eating real meals and just taking care of yourself in general might feel like a waste of time, but it’s not. You’re not going to do well if you’re exhausted and running on nothing.
You need energy to get through the week.
- Don’t Compare How You’re Studying To Everyone Else
-
It’s so easy to look around and feel like everyone else is doing more than you.
But everyone studies differently, and what works for someone else might not work for you. Some people use flashcards, some rewrite notes and some study in groups. Just do what actually helps you understand the material.
- Remind Yourself It Doesn’t Have To Be Perfect
-
Not every study session is going to be productive, and not every day is going to go as you planned.
That doesn’t mean you’re failing. Finals week is stressful, and you’re allowed to have off days. What matters is that you keep going and don’t give up on yourself halfway through.
At the end of the day, finals are important, but they don’t define everything.
Do what you can, stay consistent and try not to be so hard on yourself through it all. You’re not supposed to have it perfectly together; you’re just supposed to get through it.
