I wrote an article a little while ago about some of my favorite small music artists. Since then, I have found many other small artists that I would love to share with y’all. So, I thought it would be fun to start a series of articles where I highlight underrated artists! Please enjoy this first installment about the most unserious artist: MICO.

WHo is mico?

MICO is a Canadian pop-rock singer from Toronto who, at the time of writing this article, has 977.6k monthly listeners on Spotify. I first discovered him because he played Telemachus in Epic: The Musical, which I have written several articles about, in which he is credited as Miguel Veloso. This led to me to check out his solo music and boy, am I glad I did. MICO has an absolutely incredible voice and stage presence that immediately sucks you in. According to an interview with Billboard, he originally wanted to be a songwriter and began singing his own songs to get his music out there, but has since grown a significant following as a singer-songwriter. He is also a big 5SOS fan like me, so he has superior music taste. Speaking of taste, his Sabrina Carpenter cover hits so hard.

As you can tell from the video, MICO does not have a serious bone in his body. Although he is still a smaller artist, he already has an arsenal of memes under his belt. Some of my favorites include “You got the wrong asian” and “I don’t need a calendar to tell me when to lie.”

Discography

You’re probably thinking that since MICO is such a silly goofy guy, his music must be fun and light-hearted, right?

WRONG.

MICO’s most-streamed song, “Senses,” makes you feel like he just ripped your heart out and stomped on it. It’s absolutely diabolical that this song wasn’t written about anyone. It came out with his 2024 debut album, Internet hometown hero, and beat his previously most-streamed song, “cut my hair,” a 2022 single. You can really hear the evolution in his songwriting between these two tracks. “cut my hair,” although catchy as hell with cool instrumental elements, is a pretty basic TikTok-esque pop-punk song. If MICO wasn’t the one singing it, I doubt I would enjoy it as much. “Senses,” on the other hand, is a stripped-back ballad that experiments with a sing-songy melody, floaty production elements, and dynamics that build and drop throughout the song. It feels much more mature and thought-out. “Senses” was my second-most streamed song of 2025 for a reason: It’s just that good.

Of course, I also love MICO’s more punk tracks. “TV” is a banger about his insecurities surrounding his success and I love how the lyric video is just him crashing out in his theater kid bedroom. Another popular song of his is “Idontwannaknowyou!” about growing apart from someone and leans more into indie-pop-rock. MICO has been releasing music since his 21st century heartbreak EP in 2020, so there’s plenty of other good stuff to check out!

What’s Next?

Since his debut album, MICO has released 3 singles, “Ever After,” “Parasite,” and “Without Me,” that have the same color scheme so it’s possible that they are part of an upcoming project. On April 24th, he released another (apparently separate) single, “DREAMBOY,” which takes on a sound that’s pretty different from the music of his that I’ve heard before. It kind of gives The 1975. He is currently still on what I believe is the Internet Hometown Hero Tour. He also recently performed “HOMESICK,” the lead single from his album, at the Juno Awards where he was nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Whatever he does next, MICO has built quite a bit of momentum which I expect will (hopefully) propel him to greater heights.
