For 20 years, Michigan State University’s Impulse Dance Team has been at the forefront of student run organizations. It is a place for dancers with advanced experience to share their passions and appreciation for this beautiful sport.

Impulse is a team made up of about 10-15 dancers who all share a deep love for dance. It was specifically designed this way in order to create lifelong friendships. Being a member gives students the opportunity to not only perform, but choreograph various different styles of dances.

For many incoming college students, graduating high school also comes with the idea of retiring from the sport they grew up with. Impulse gives past athletes the opportunity to continue to foster their creativity. It also provides a tight knit sisterhood of women who constantly uplift and support one another.

“My favorite part about being a member of this club is that I now have a close friendship with all of the girls,” sophomore Sierra Moore said. “We often hangout together outside of dance, which creates a loving and supportive environment at practice.”

Practices are typically held only 2-3 times a week, which provides the dancers with the opportunity to escape the stress of their academics. Although the team does not compete in any competitions, they participate in various different performances. Throughout the school year, you can catch Impulse at the Homecoming Parade, the MSU Rodeo, their annual spring showcase, or their many different pop-up events.

The Impulse team is almost always together; aside from their many performances, they also have a ton of team bonding events. This includes a hayride, team dinners, Christmas parties, and more.

“Our team really feels like a big group of friends…” Co-Chair Jessica Harper said. “We hang out a lot outside of practice, and are still friends long after our time at Michigan State is done.”

With the end of the year approaching, it means their final performance of the school year is almost here. The annual showcase typically takes place within the final two months of the spring semester. It is an event that is open to all, made to highlight each dancer on her growth from the beginning of the year. With each year having a different overall theme to the event, and some guest performances from other MSU organizations, it is always so exciting to watch.

Girls interested in joining go through an audition process sometime within the first few weeks of the fall semester. Day one typically involves some across the floor combos and a jazz combo. Callbacks the following day consist of a contemporary combo.

“Be yourself! At auditions, we really look for personalities that match the fun loving members of our team, and people who truly have a passion for dance!” Co-Chair Claire Young said.
